FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 LIVE UPDATES: Spain’s late strike sinks Portugal

Portugal is all set to face Spain at the Dallas stadium in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash. The match will feature 41-year-old Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo and 18-year-old Spanish sensation Lamine Yamal.

Prior to their Round of 16 clash this year, Portugal and Spain have faced each other twice in FIFA World Cup history, with Spain winning one match and the other ending in a draw.

The winner of the match advances to the quarter-finals to face either the US or Belgium in Los Angeles. 

Here are the line-ups for today’s match.

Portugal: Diogo Costa, João Cancelo, Rúben Dias, Renato Veiga, Nuno Mendes, João Neves, Vitinha, Pedro Neto, Bruno Fernandes, João Félix, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Spain: Unai Simón, Pedro Porro, Pau Cubarsí, Aymeric Laporte, Marc Cucurella, Rodri, Pedri, Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Álex Baena, and Mikel Oyarzabal.

2.32 am: SPAIN through to quarter-finals

Spain are through to the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after edging Portugal 1-0 in a tightly contested Round of 16 clash. A solitary strike in the stoppage time was enough to separate the Iberian rivals, with Spain standing firm until the final whistle to book their place in the last eight, while Portugal’s World Cup journey comes to an end.

2.29 am: Silva comes close with a header

Portuguese midfielder Silva leapt to head the ball, which went inches over the crossbar. PURE DRAMA!

2.23 am: GOAL for Spain!

A quick free kick led to the gameplay. Portugal was not ready when the ball was received by Torres, who gave a sublime through ball to Merino, making him 1v1 with the goalkeeper. Merino calmly finished in the bottom corner. Just six minutes LEFT! 1-0 to Spain.

2.17 am: Tactical change for Spain

Merino and Ruiz came in to replace Olmo and Pedri. It’s still level.

2.11 am: Olmo fails to find the back of the net

A through ball finds an unmarked Olmo, who turned and cut out before taking a shot, which was saved by Costa.

2.08 am: Bruno shoots it wide

A volley from Bruno went wide. Good chance for Portugal.

2.05 am: Yamal’s free-kick tipped over by Costa

Yamal earned a free-kick at the edge of the penalty box after Semedo pulled him from behind. The 18-year-old stepped up to take the kick. He shoots it straight at the keeper, who parried it away for a corner.

1.54 am: Back-to-back corners for Spain

Spain gets to back-to-back corners after a quick attack. However, no such impact. Score remains goalless.

1.48 am: First substitution of the match

Worry for Portugal as Mendes limped off the pitch. Semedo comes in to replace him. Opportunity opens up for Yamal.

1.43 am: Neto with a low cross, Ronaldo fails to catch up

Neto fired on a low cross after sprinting from the right flank. The speed was a bit too high as Ronaldo failed to reach the ball on time.

1.40 am: Spain tries to frustrate Portugal

Too many passes from the Spanish side. But they are unable to play around in the midfield.

1.21 am: It’s goalless after 45 minutes

Spain had a few chances in the first half, but Portugal held them well. Neither of the teams could break the deadlock.

1.11 am: OFF THE WOODWORK!

A powerful left-footed punch from Mendes deflected off Porro and hit the crossbar. The ball could have gone anywhere. SPAIN saved by the bar. Still 0-0 with five minutes of regulation time left.

1.01 am: Olmo in offside position

A good chance for Olmo, who headed the ball wide. BUT, the flag was up. Would not have been counted anyway.

12.46 am: Stunning double save from Costa

Yamal makes a run before cutting in and taking a shot with his left foot. It was parried away by Costa. But the ball fell on Baena’s feet. He attempted a curler from the left side of the penalty box. SAVED AGAIN by Costa. HIGH TEMPO! It’s 0-0 after 16 minutes.

12.38 am: Oyarzabal misses a sitter

Oyarzabal was through for a 1v1 with the goalkeeper after a defence-splitting pass. However, the Spanish forward shot wide with his left foot.

12.30 am: And it starts. Portugal, Spain face off in knockouts

The whistle has been blown in one of the most anticipated matches of the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 as Portugal and Spain get their knockout campaign underway. With a place in the quarter-finals at stake, the Iberian rivals have 90 minutes—or more—to settle this heavyweight contest.
