2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 LIVE UPDATES: Haaland brace stuns Brazil as Norway storm into World Cup quarter-finals

Norway produced one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating five-time champions Brazil 2-1 in the Round of 16 to book a place in the quarter-finals. Erling Haaland starred with a second-half brace, while goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland made a series of crucial saves to preserve Norway’s lead.

Neymar pulled one back late in the match, but Brazil could not find an equaliser as their quest for a record-extending sixth World Cup title came to an end.

Norway will now face the winner of the Mexico vs England clash in the quarter-finals.

Here are the line-ups for the match.

3.32 am: Neymar pulls one back for Brazil

The referee points to the spot after a foul on Casemiro in the penalty box. Neymar steps up before calmly finishing it with a low shot toward the right side. IT’S 2-1.

3.22 am: Haaland strikes AGAIN! 2-0 for Norway.

Haaland receives the ball outside the left side of the penalty box. He looks up once toward the goal and fires an absolute belter into the second bottom corner. Alison had no chance. Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti gets a reality check. He is DEFEATED! Norway march toward the Round of 16.

3.19 am: Nyland to the RESCUE again!

Brazil are piling on the pressure in search of an equaliser, but the Norwegian goalkeeper produces yet another brilliant fingertip save to preserve his side’s 1-0 lead. Norway’s defence continues to hold firm with the quarter-finals in sight.

3.11 am: GOAL for Norway

With just 10 minutes to play, Haaland scores from a pinpoint header. The attack starts from the left wing with the impact substitute Schjelderup outrunning two defenders before delivering a tempting cross inside the box. Haaland makes a quick run to outjump Magalhaes and fires the ball inside the net with a rifle header. IT’S 1-0 FOR NORWAY! Let’s see how the five-time world champion responds.

3.08 am: SAVE from Alison

A quick counter-attack from Norway splits the Brazilian midfield. The ball lands to Haaland, who passes it wide to Schjelderup. The 22-year-old cuts in and shoots toward the near post. A routine double-hand save from the goalkeeper keeps the score 0-0.

2.59 am: Big chance for Haaland

Ajer fires it across the D-box with the outside of his foot from the left flank. Haaland slides and tries his best, but he could not reach the ball. A slight touch could have ended the ball inside the net. It’s still goalless.

2.52 am: Endrick misses a 1-on-1 chance

A defence-splitting through ball from Vinicious gives Endrick a 1-on-1 chance. However, he fires wide as Nyland comes off his line to narrow his angle. Brazil keeps knocking on the door.

2.44 am: Slow start to the second half

Five minutes into the second half, and it has been slow from both sides.

2.22 am: It’s 0-0 at half-time

Brazil and Norway go into the break deadlocked at 0-0 after an entertaining first half in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash. Norway enjoyed more possession, but Brazil created more chances.

2.18 am: Norway misses huge chance

Haaland tries to power past the Brazilian defence. It leads to a loose ball picked up by Odegaard. He fires straight into Alison. HUGE CHANCE WASTED!

2.09 am: Another SAVE from Nyland!

Vinicious steals the ball with a nudge inside the penalty box. It is picked by Martinelli, who passes it back to Vinicious. The Brazilian winger cuts out with a feint and shoots with his left foot toward the bottom near post. Nyland does not make a mistake to cover the first post and saves with his leg.

2.01 am: Chance for Brazil

Martinelli with the run from the left wing. He tries for a low cross to Guimaraes from a tight angle. But Nyland sticks his leg out to deflect the ball. Corner for Brazil.

1.54 am: Penalty appeal

Brazil appeals for another penalty after a shove from the defender inside the D-box. It’s denied by the referee. Score stays 0-0.

1.44 am: HUGE SAVE from Nyland!

Guimaraes tries to deceive with a stutter. It doesn’t pay off. Nyland dives to his left for the SAVE!. Not a great penalty from the Brazilian.

1.43 am: Brazil gets a Penalty

After a foul on Bruno Guimaraes, Brazil gets a penalty. He will take the shot.

1.41 am: Possible PENALTY for Brazil!

Referee checks the monitor for a penalty in the 12th minute. Sheer drama in the first 10 minutes.

1.39 am: Vinicious arrives

Swift footwork from the Brazilian winger Vinicious Junior wrongfoots the defender. But the touch was too heavy! Goalkick.

1.33 am: OFFSIDE for Norway

Norwegian midfielder Patrick Berg scores within three minutes… BUT, it has been ruled OFFSIDE! Pure drama from the beginning.

1.30 am: HERE WE GO! It kicks off amid a packed stadium

It kicks off at the New York New Jersey Stadium, which is packed with yellow t-shirts. Brazil is attacking from left to right.
