New Delhi: The 2026 FIFA World Cup final at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, will feature a historic showdown between reigning European champions Spain and Copa America winners Argentina. This marks the first time in the world’s biggest football tournament’s history that the reigning continental champions will lock horns in the World Cup final.

Spain’s power-packed team will face defending champions Argentina, which have produced late-minute goals to secure their spot in the final. The international football scene has given us cross-continental masterclasses before, but never has it presented a heavyweight box-office showdown with these exact credentials.

The two teams were supposed to meet in March for the Finalissima. However, the match, which was supposed to happen in Qatar, was called off for security reasons due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The fans are now all set for the battle of the two giants from two different continents.

Spain has been the competition’s most clinical and structurally dominant side, sweeping past Kylian Mbappe’s France 2-0 in their semi-final. The team has only conceded one goal throughout the tournament. The Spanish side enters the final on a 37-match unbeaten streak across all competitions and friendlies, with 28 wins and nine draws.

While Spain’s path was clinical, Argentina’s was dramatic. The side, defending their crown, pulled off a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory against a defensive England side at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Argentina has scored the most goals in this tournament and is now up against a side that has conceded the least. The Messi-led team has also remained unbeaten in their last 13 World Cup matches, with 11 victories and two draws.

‘I know the team very well’

Following Argentina’s advancement to the final, Messi shared his views on the Spanish side, in which several players are from FC Barcelona. The football legend has spent the majority of his club career in that country with FC Barcelona. It will be the first time he will be facing Spain in his World Cup career.

“Spain is a great team with outstanding players and a very distinctive style of play. They’re a team I know very well, with a football philosophy they’ve been following for many years. I know their players too,” he said. “I’ve faced many of them, and I still follow them. Several of them play for Barcelona, a club I love and continue to follow. So it will be a special match because it’s a World Cup final, and naturally I expect it to be a very even game.”

The final features a direct generational battlefield between Spain’s teenage prodigy Lamine Yamal and the 39-year-old Messi, who is all out to defend his crown. As FIFA-ranked 1 Argentina clashes with FIFA-ranked 2 Spain, the stage for a thrilling contest is neatly set.
