In Arnab Goswami’s arrest, the emergence of Uddhav 2.0

Arnab Goswami’s arrest by Maharashtra Police is Uddhav Thackeray’s message to Modi-Shah: ‘I won't go down without a fight.’

The arrest of Republic TV anchor Arnab Goswami, regardless of the merits of the abetment to suicide case, is a stunning political development. It would have been unthinkable until recently. This is an act of great daring by Uddhav Thackeray and the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra that needs to be seen in its political context.

Leave aside the Narendra Modi government’s alleged backing to Arnab Goswami or how cabinet ministers and senior BJP leaders came out in his support. Even without it, Arnab Goswami is a very powerful man. He is India’s rabble-rouser-in-chief. He riles people up every night. No single journalist was as responsible for the downfall of Congress-led UPA-2 as Arnab Goswami. In a country where politicians face little to no accountability for mass riots under their watch, Goswami’s arrest comes with a huge political message and far-reaching ramifications.

Neutralising BJP’s prime weapon against MVA

The manner in which Uddhav Thackeray became chief minister and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) came about despite the BJP’s best attempts — including the 7.50 am swearing-in of Devendra Fadnavis — has been a humiliation for the BJP. The party of Narendra Modi and Amit Shah has doubtless been trying to topple the MVA government just as it has toppled opposition governments in Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka, and came close to doing it in Rajasthan.

Arnab Goswami became a key player in the BJP’s effort to delegitimise the MVA government in Mumbai. As of now, with Goswami’s arrest, we can say the effort is backfiring on the BJP.

On 16 April, two sadhus and their driver were lynched in Palghar. BJP leaders, pro-BJP social media warriors and pro-BJP news media all tried to communalise the incident, trying to bring in a false Muslim angle one way or the other. Leading the pack was Arnab Goswami.

Uddhav 2.0

It was only last month that the Mumbai Police issued Arnab Goswami a show cause notice for his communally charged remarks on the Palghar incident. What happened between April and October is the story of the transformation of Uddhav Thackeray from Mr Nice Guy to the fighter who is ready to take on the Modi government at the Centre. In Mumbai’s political circles, he’s being called Uddhav 2.0.

As the Election Commission was not holding polls in May due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Uddhav Thackeray faced a peculiar situation of not being able to become a legislator within six months of his swearing-in. He had to make a call to the prime minister to make that happen.

The time has come to decide whether the opposition has to fight or cower in fear, Uddhav Thackeray said in an online meeting of opposition chief ministers with Sonia Gandhi in August. “Darna hai ya ladna hai,” he said.

Even if the BJP eventually manages to topple the Uddhav government, the chief minister has made it clear he’s not going down without a fight. That is the message in the arrest of Arnab Goswami.

Arnab’s miscalculation

Arnab Goswami famously decided to base himself in Mumbai rather than Delhi because he wanted to be away from the ‘corrupting’ influence of Lutyens’ Delhi. He didn’t want to hang out with politicians in Delhi so that he does not get entangled in the power corridors of the national capital. Ironically, he has trapped himself in Mumbai’s power games in a much more insidious way.

Goswami had been daring Uddhav Thackeray for a while. After the Palghar incident, there were protests by migrant labourers in Bandra, which again Arnab Goswami tried to communalise by linking it to a nearby mosque. There was the Sushant Singh Rajput’s death case in which Arnab Goswami tried to suggest the role of the Shiv Sena, referring to malicious and baseless rumours of Aditya Thackeray’s involvement. Goswami’s attacks would be directly aimed at Uddhav Thackeray: ‘You will lose your job,’ speaking in a manner harsher than any opposition leader does.

Perhaps Arnab Goswami thought the Maharashtra government won’t be able to touch him. He was too big to be jailed. He had the backing of Delhi. Most of all, the Uddhav government wouldn’t arrest him for fear of looking vindictive. So he kept raising the stakes. Uddhav would look weak if he didn’t go after Arnab and he would look excessive if he did — this seemed to be his calculation. Uddhav has done what Arnab seemed to think was impossible: put India’s most feared TV news anchor in jail.

Preparing for the backlash

This is a message from Uddhav to Modi: stop messing with me. The message is daring to the extent that the Modi government is bound to react. Not only will the BJP do whatever it can to save Arnab Goswami, it could also strain relations in far-reaching ways between the Centre and the Maharashtra government. Isn’t Uddhav Thackeray afraid of the backlash? Has he chewed off more than he can bite?

The MVA government seems to be preparing for this backlash by playing the Marathi card, launching corruption investigations against the previous BJP government, and beginning to poach BJP leaders to weaken the party in Maharashtra. In other words, the MVA government is dealing with the challenges in the same manner that the Modi-Shah’s party does.

Marathi ‘asmita’

The Shiv Sena is presenting Arnab Goswami as an outsider who was hurting Marathi pride by attacking Uddhav Thackeray day in and day out. The more the Centre goes after the MVA government, the more it will strengthen the Marathi pride card of Shiv Sena, much like Narendra Modi used to speak of Gujarati ‘Asmita’ when he would face legal threats or media criticism from Delhi.

This is why associations of journalists in Maharashtra have refused to condemn Arnab’s arrest, while pointing out that he has been arrested in a case that has nothing to do with journalism or free speech. Even in the Sushant Singh Rajput case, Uddhav Thackeray responded to attempts to malign Aaditya Thackeray by playing the Marathi card: “Those crying for justice for Bihar’s son are indulging in character assassination of Maharashtra’s son,” he said.

From Bhagat Singh Koshyari of Uttarakhand to Kangana Ranaut of Himachal Pradesh, those attacking Uddhav Thackeray are, for the Shiv Sena, outsiders out to hurt Marathi pride.

Poaching mass leaders

The Shiv Sena and the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have been weakening the BJP in Maharashtra in other ways. The BJP had shed its Brahmin-Baniya image in Maharashtra by carefully cultivating an OBC leadership but then made a Brahmin, Devendra Fadnavis, the chief minister. This helped the NCP in the 2019 Maharashtra assembly election. Now, the NCP has poached the BJP’s OBC leader, Eknath Khadse, a Leva Patel. The Shiv Sena is rumoured to be in talks with Pankaja Munde. Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar are doing to the BJP in Maharashtra what the BJP has been doing to opposition parties nationally: poach BJP leaders with some mass base.

Corruption investigations

The MVA government has already set-up a special investigation team to look into corruption charges in the Devendra Fadnavis government’s flagship scheme to raise ground water level in drought-prone districts, and has promised to investigate an alleged recruitment scam under Fadnavais’ watch.

When Arnab is out on bail…

What happens when Arnab Goswami gets bail, which he might get sooner than people ordinarily do, given that he can hire the best of lawyers who will also have the BJP’s support. Arnab Goswami will go back to his studio and continue his agenda against the Uddhav government. He’s practically the main opposition leader in Maharashtra now.

It is not as if Arnab Goswami wasn’t already attacking Uddhav Thackeray. He can’t do any more of it because he was doing that 24×7 anyway. The MVA government must be hoping that some cooling off time in jail will make Arnab Goswami wonder if it is worth it. It might help that a bevy of cases have been lined up against Arnab Goswami, and the Maharashtra government can keep arresting him.

Republic without Arnab

Putting Arnab Goswami away in jail for a single day also serves the purpose of hitting Republic where it hurts. The English and Hindi channels both have Arnab Goswami as their main attraction. It is Arnab’s screaming and shouting that gets the TRPs and thus the advertising. With Arnab in jail, there will be no prime time entertainment. With so much else on the news cycle, how long will people watch anodyne anchors play victim on behalf of Arnab Goswami? The story will bore people and Republic TV and Republic Bharat’s ratings, rigged or not, will crash.

Uddhav Thackeray launched a blistering attack on the BJP and the Modi government recently in his Dusshera speech. He said, “It has been a year now. From the day I became the CM, it was being said that the state government will be toppled. I challenge and say that if you have the courage, do it and show.”

  1. I am hardcore Shiv Sena support but I it is embarrassing to see what is happening these days.
One family doesn’t represent all marathis.
It is unfortunate that all laws are kept aside for satisfying personal vendetta.

Balasaheb is great but others are just trying to encash his image.
    Jai Bharat, Jai Maharashtra.

  2. I think it’s time to Sack Parambir and Uddhav Thackeray. We all know what The Print is. Looks like a Shiv Sena Sponsored article. Shame on you The Print. Very cleverly you are hiding truth and glamorising Uddhav

  3. Keep larping and repeating same lies again and again regarding Gujrat Riots and Godhra ambush (which actually started the whole so called riots by Minorities) while UPA era Supreme Court investigation team clearly gave him absolute clean chit. Jhan*2 congressi activists like Shivam will then wonder why Modi wins when he wins and will stay irrelevant.

  4. Journalism should be free from political affiliations. Courage to speak the truth should not be allowed to be bulldozed by aspirations for being in affiliation with powerful. When we say freedom of press, it is the expectation of the citizens that pen and voice reflects truth. For this we should have a complete unbiased and autonomous media. Well do we have one? What we see today is a platform for washing dirty linens. Journalism has become extremely commercial and driven by political aspirations. A time to change…….

  5. What is happening in Maharashtra is pure .Politics being played by NCP and its owner Sharad Pawar. He knows this alliance is totally unnatural . Home minister belongs to his party . They are mis using police force .But its impact is falling on Chief Minister belonging to Shiv Sena. Whatever is done by police to target Kangan or Arnab , Thackerey becomes object of ridicule. This drama will go on as long as this un natural alliance survives. And one thing about the writer of this article. He seems to be a naive person . He supports Congress , but does not know how Congress thinks and works. For Congress every one , except a Family, is disposable. Even Sharad was disposed off. at one time. But Sharad has ingrained those qualities in his working. . He is showing door to Thackerey. But he is not understanding. The journalist writing this article does not use brain to think and see hidden meaning and hidden agenda in the act done by Congress man and ex-congressman. May God enlighten him as yet ThePrint is condemned to keep him on its Rolls.

  6. A sentence highlighting the sheer incompetence of Shivam Vij: “No single journalist was as responsible for the downfall of Congress-led UPA-2 as Arnab Goswami”.

There can be no better example of sheer nonsense. Is a journalist responsible for the downfall of UPA-? So if UPA loses an election in state after state after state, it isn’t because of their incompetence and corruption or their inability to reach the masses, it is because of Arnab? Theprint should start reviewing manuscripts for rudimentary forms of rationality and logic, before publishing them.

    • True. How many people in India watch English news and in that how many watch Republic. Our media nowhere has the impact they would like to believe they have especially English

  7. Udhavji is the CM of all Maharashtrians and all Mumbaikars irrespective of caste and creed. any insult to him and specifically Arnab’s threats were deeply insulting to all of us. We will not tolerate this and the BJP and the center better learn that soon. There are many more reasons why Arnab should be arrested. They should be initiated one after the other. Lets see him rot in jail like the other journalists and innocent people.

    • Well what about all the abusive words directed against The PM of India? How is that acceptable? I dont see anyone standing up against that!!

    • I did not realize the Mumbaikars considered themselves separate from Indians. Your comment says that. Arnav vs Udhav is journalist-politician fight. If you make this Mumbaikar vs rest of Indian fight, you will lose. Remember – you are an Indian first and not a Mumbaikar first, otherwise you will find yourself very lonely. Bollywood is feeling that.

    • Being a Maharashtrian has nothing to do with this. Uddhav Thackeray got lucky. Please remember the people of Maharashtra never chose Uddhav Thackeray, only because BJP got less numbers in coalition, Uddhav became a situational leader, PM. Balasaheb Thackeray was a legendary leader, the same cannot be said about Uddhav. Furthermore no True Blood Marathi Manoos that includes me would ever vouch for a leader who destroys the home/office of a woman, Kangana. Same goes for Aarnab you cannot shut people through Hooliganism for long.

  8. Arnab Goswami has done great service to Indian journalism, and Shivam Vij’s poorly written article proves this point. It is Arnab Goswami who has highlighted various issues which our highly dishonest left “liberal” journalists choose to conveniently ignore. This includes issues such as triple talaq, the benefits of the CAA, the issue of the gruesome murder of Kamlesh Tiwari (which leftist channels falsely blamed on BJP/RSS workers), cases such as the murder of Nikita Tomar, the murder of sadhus, and the case of Sushant Singh Rajput (which the CBI is still investigating ). Were it not for Arnab, such issues would never have seen the light of the day. Let us not forget that leftists journalists like Rajdeep Sardesai indulged in false reporting during the Sohrabuddin encounter case, and were let go by the court for a mere apology. Let us not forget that several UPA-allied government including the present Maharashtra government is preventing fair investigation by curbing the entry of the CBI. As far as criticizing Arnab for his journalism, what has Shivam Vij done other than his banal, poorly composed, repetitive rants against Narendra Modi?

  9. It’s a very well written article and obviously would irritate the Andha Bhakta of the ruling Delhi government Or so to say of BJP.
I don’t get the foul language used in the comment section by some of the commentators for the author. I would urge author to continue putting a right perspective and don’t get deterred away by such people who are glorifying foul mouthed person who by any stretch of imagination cannot be called as journalist. Some commentators here may happen to be paid stooges of BJP as they have already swarmed internet in last 6 years. The Print is an independent media house and I suppose they are rightfully doing their duty for allowing all the views to be expressed and discussed. The single point agenda of Bhakta comments is to discredit the article and author and put up pressure. It’s very unfortunate to put up media in compartments, either you’re with us or against us. It’s real shame that some of the people of this country can’t even tolerate well articulated views of a section of society and at the same time using foul language themselves and glorifying foul mouthed Arnab who has no shame and decency in his tirade during open TV media.
For haters and those waiting to thrash me in comment section, let me clear out that I’m Marathi and Hindu and never voted for Congress/NCP, instead voted both time for Fadnavis however I’m deeply hurt by the deeds of BJP in Maharashtra in last year and doubt if I’m going to vote for them again. There are millions like me. BJP has deceived their very base of silent voters by venturing into unnecessary polarisation. In 2014, NCP was most hated party in Maharashtra, thanks to last one year now BJP is the proud owner of that title and as the arrogance of leadership has it, leadership is not bothered. Fadnavis and Chandrakant Patil can only be described as deputies of Modi-Shah and not the representatives of Marathi people. Fadnavis let IFC move to Ahmedabad instead of Mumbai without even uttering a single word when Mumbai is clearly the financial capital of India. I won’t blame Modi-Shah, as they’re doing best they can to develop Gujrat and that’s good for Gujrat but the fools who are from Maharashtra should introspect and learn something from their bosses. Not only this, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet train is nothing of significance to Maharashtra nor do its very significant for country, still Maharashtra is compelled to invest into the project which would only benefit Ahmedabad at the cost of Mumbai. All these incidents are bringing forth the history. 106 Marathi people were martyred all over the state to suppress popular demand of inclusion of Mumbai in Maharashtra. If UT is taking inspiration from his grandfather Prabodhankar Thackeray and Hutatma Chowk, getting into aggressive UT 2.0 role, he will have popular supporting. SS may have used sentiments of Marathi people and pride, Asmita etc in the past to gain political mileage and in the process may have ignored the real issues also, they’ve paid for that as their Marathi base is shrinking in BMC elections consistently. But this time the threat is real, and it’s coming from top leadership and people are aware about it. More the BJP would try to bulldoze UT, more they would fall in trap and more sympathy would be gained by SS. SS would reclaim its withering base and emerge into rejuvenated form with new allies. Now coming to some of the issues discussed in article and in comments,

    1. Why there has two standards of justice, one for Arnab and another for Vinod Dua? And everyone knows the credibility of these two. It’s really shameful that BJP is all out for the protection for Arnab while consistently doing the same with others in their ruled states. The cases are not even comparable. FIR for Dua was totally related to his piece of reporting while in Arnab case, it’s criminal matter totally unrelated to journalism. I dare those people and BJP leaders questioning the motive of arrest to stand in front of Naik family and utter a word. I can’t imagine the helpless Marathi family who witnessed two suicides in family, thanks to someone who happens to be so powerful that even when the suicide note clearly mentions his name, is able to shut the case within a year. At least they have some hope now. You may or may not be culprit Mr Arnab Goswami but you’re not above the law. Is Mr Arnab enjoys diplomatic immunity in India? Can he get away with murder? I know the arrest is politically motivated and I’m not justifying vindictive agenda if there is any, but Police are well within their rights to investigate the matter, let them do their job.

    2. Someone mentioned Kangana here who can easily be called Arnab of Bollywood. Clearly she’s been touted by BJP to open venomous attack on UT and AT. Sanjay Raut’s comment on her was definitely not in good taste but the BJP Sanskriti Rakshaks supporting Kangana conveniently forget the unimaginable maligning campaign BJP had against Urmila Matondkar not so long back.

    3. Another campaign of BJP which is echoed in comment section : Balasaheb was great but Uddhav is the villain. They fear Marathi people base won’t like anything against Balasaheb, that’s true. But at the same time, one must understand that Marathi people won’t like it against UT/AT also if it’s shameless agenda of maligning their image. Also to refresh memories, Balasaheb was the only leader in opposition camp who openly supported Indira Gandhi during emergency, rather Indira Gandhi was the only congress leader whom he adored. It’s no surprise then that Sanjay Raut and SS is welcoming comparison of UT with Indiraji.

    4. Aditya Thackeray is wonderful human being, very decent polite development minded young leader who has a bright future. In very little time, he has demonstrated his administrative skills in Tourism ministry. And that’s why BJP is all out against him, there that eminent challenger in future to be dealt with. SSR case was dragged unnecessarily into political mess and BJP crossed all lines to stretch all imaginations to involve AT into that. To the credit of AT, so called inexperienced 30 year old young man, he is unfettered by this at least in public and doing the right thing of focusing on work.

    5. Finally there is Governor. What a great man, loyal to his party and his leader. As BJP is known for it, to degenerate all the great institutions of this country and make them subservient to the great leader who may only be compared with the great Sardar Patel, the faith in the institution of Governor is all but lost. Giving oath to the new government at 730 in the morning and lifting president rule in 3 hours, deliberately meddling into political affairs of the state, giving grand welcome to Kangana who happens to be greatest celebrity India ever has with Y+security cover GOI ( I wonder whether GOI would have extended same courtesy to poor family of Naik receiving daily threats), showing faith in party agenda rather than constitution when questioning the CM whether he has turned secular if Mandirs are not opened during pandemic – these are all great acts of valour requiring tremendous courage to defy norms and precedence. I’m bringing this issue up because in near future we all will see H.E. Governor of Maharashtra meddling into Arnab case and reprimanding government for not handling the issue well. After all, Governor of Maharashtra is supposed to do everything to protect interests of citizen of the state, specially those who are against opposition party ruled government. He may well be reminded politely that Naik family members are also citizens of Maharashtra and before meddling into Arnab case, they should be heard – just their side of story to be heard without even giving grand welcome like Kangana.

Disclaimer : I support wholeheartedly the decision of abrogation of article370, foreign policy of India, I’m proud of soldiers and Indian army and glad to see government backing them, and the decisions of Modi-Shah in the interest of country. Protecting criminal, solidarity to criminal by wearing black ribbons, maligning common Marathi family and trying every bit to topple opposition government cannot be in the best interest of the country. Just hate them when they reduce themselves to political partisanship and spread hatred, divisiveness, polarisation and intolerance.

Disclaimer is important because the BJP Bhakta will nevertheless drag the conversation on those lines irrelevant to present case, as that’s the only defence available and that’s what they do all the time.

    • Sir,
Is this the same Vinod Dua who was named in a me too case?
Also is it in video causing a panchayat president to file a case against a journalist in Uttar Pradesh for the midday meal scam?. I would not be sure.

      • This coloumist don’t know real politics, if shiv Sena marata pride, then what about Sharad pawar and his family ready to sacrifice CM post when they have Supriya Sule, Ajith pawar and his son.

If Shiv Sena sacrifice CM post when they have Aditya Takrey, Uddav Tackrey and what about Prithvi Raj Chawan, Ashok chavan is they INC not greed power after losing every state, party needs money.

In the name of Maratha pride all are not blind support family politics. Everyone pull each other different.

BJP is completely different they vote only for Modi, because of his trust on.

This coloumist writing one side of coin. The politics much far than that. Some points may write but not all. His dream Marta party not consolidate every time

          COVID-19 situation in Maharashtra

240 days after, experts dissect State and Centre’s decisions to contain the virus
Maharashtra’s COVID-19 crisis is the result of many factors — failure of collective action between the Centre and the State, lack of Mumbai-specific approach to fight against the virus, and a blanket implementation of lockdown without a plan to utilise the time effectively and prepare the health system.

These are some of the observations of health experts and activists who have closely analysed the turn of events over the last 100 days, since Maharashtra recorded its first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus on March 9.

The State is now a red zone, accounting for nearly 32% of India’s cases and 41% of the deaths. While the healthcare system continues to crumble under the pressure, a new wave of cases is anticipated as the State begins to unlock in phases.

          Tragedy of errors

Virologist Dr. T Jacob John termed Maharashtra’s situation as a tragedy of errors. He said responding to such large-scale epidemics is the Centre’s job, as per India’s constitutional norms.

“I don’t think Maharashtra was properly advised, warned, and given a blueprint by the Centre to follow.

So, when the epidemic hit, Maharashtra was under-prepared,” Dr. Jacob John said, adding the Indian government was too slow to react and it should have acted before the virus came into the country in January.

“Our parliament was adjourned only on March 23. What message does this send to all States? That everything is normal.”

According to Dr. Jacob John, Kerala managed to take independent decisions while most other States did not. “Maharashtra should have activated its think-tank as Kerala did.”

He said that the lockdown gave a false impression of supreme confidence but the reality was that it was not going to work in extremely congested places like Mumbai.

“Mumbai is the economic engine and the city had to be protected with extra care. But a Mumbai-specific approach was never taken,” he said.

          Long-term repercussions

Experts highlighted how the governments — the State as well as the Centre — had a casual approach about the upcoming threat.

“We knew about the possible threat since December end. Yet, at the airports, most people got a safe passage even as they were asymptomatic carriers of the virus.

Why did not we implement compulsory quarantining of passengers?” questioned Soumitra Ghosh, a professor from the School of Health System Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences.

He said there continues to be a rise in cases because the epidemic could not be arrested in time. “In Wuhan, they managed to mobilise manpower of 43,000 in two weeks.

How many doctors, intensivists have been brought to Mumbai from other parts?

There is an absolute lack of collective action between the Centre and the State even as Maharashtra dabbles with the surge,” Mr. Ghosh said, warning that the mishandling of the situation has caused great disruptions and the long-term repercussions, especially in patients requiring non-COVID-19 treatment, would be worrisome.

          Lockdown, a crude instrument

Public health expert Dr. Abhay Shukla said the generalised lockdown had a dampening effect than a precise outcome.

“Take the examples of South Korea or Kerala, where the entire focus was on intensive outreach, testing, contact tracing, isolation, and containment or micro containment,” Dr. Shukla said, adding that with such strategies, the need for a blanket lockdown would have been less.

      • I see Arnab and Republic as the best INDIA has got in a media House. In fact Republic Media is better than BBC, Sky News , CNN.

Now the reason for my high rating of Republic isn t because I actually like the news, I don’t. I have simply given Republic the High rating because it is doing exactly what a media house should do challenge within democracy.

You seem to imply the Maharashtra government is leading well. They are not doing well.

If you have to repress people you are not leading but dictating. Perhaps you are unfamiliar with the actually facts about Mumbai .

The government has not been duly elected by the people Further I don’t share your bias that Arnab and Republic are targeting Maharashtra government.

        Not true.

A number of cases have occured whwre the conduct of police and government has been very suspicious and strange.

The arrest according to the magistrates court is illegal for the 2018 case you refer to was closed and wpuld require new or further evidence directly linking Arnab with the Suicide.

In fact a lawyer has reported that he has looked or gained access to the alledged suicide letter and suggests with investigation it should establish it was written by a woman and not the man who is deceased.

Your post overall is senseless and without insult pointless. For the idea should be to express your thoughts without appearing to take sides or in your case besmirch Arnab and his Channel.

Further like it not I am not into news at all but it is evident Republic is relevant to India right now and the other media houses cannot cut it. Reason they do not believe in people nor in the idea of serving people .

So the entire episode of Uddav and Param arresting Arnab illegally and re opening a case which should be done via the court law is 100% wrong.

Further their action are clearly maligned and vengeful. I have listened to Arnab about the Maha Governenmt and I can see it is the truth because I don’t see malice or ill motive in Arnab, a nationalist yes, do I share that idea not really but he wants a better India.

Not one where media play to the narritive’s of corrupt politicians and mafia within the systems of Maharashtra.

So I am a fan of Arnqb and Republic and I think Maharashtra will pay the price legally for using laws, due process thrown aside. Constitution of INDIA mocked and your high courts , Supreme Courts and Magistrates Courts.

I don’t see why Uddav and Param are in these high profile riles. It certainly ain’t to serve people. It drunk on power over people . What you have missed and quite important.

This people of India whom feels this channel represents them as opposed to India Today or other channels more middle class and upper.

But I am sure that everything would be out soon.

I see Arnab and Republic as the best INDIA has got in a media House. In fact Republic Media is better than BBC, Sky News , CNN.

Environmentalists welcome decision; 800 acres in Aarey declared as forest area; cases against protesters to be dropped: Maharashtra CM

Fulfilling one of its promises in the Shiv Sena election manifesto, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday announced the shifting of the Metro car shed from the Aarey forest area in the western suburbs to a government plot in Kanjurmarg in the eastern suburbs at “zero cost”.

“We all are aware of the Metro car shed construction issues at Aarey.

They were raised even before the Assembly elections last year.

I was not the Chief Minister then but was heading the party contesting the elections, and we opposed the plan at that time,” Mr. Thackeray said in a webcast.

“The car shed will now be moved to Kanjurmarg. So questions will arise as to who will bear these costs.

Let me make this clear today. The State government has allotted the land for Metro for “zero rupees”,” he said.

The Chief Minister said the move to build the car shed at Aarey had seen a lot of protests, agitations, cutting of trees at night, and charges filed against protesters.

“The Cabinet has decided to drop all charges filed against the protesters striving to protect the environment,” he added.

Mr. Thackeray said the building which has come up in the Aarey site will be utilised for some other public purpose. “About ₹100 crore expenditure was incurred for the purpose and it won’t go waste,” he said.

Nearly 800 acres in Aarey has been declared as forest area, making it the first extensive forest blossoming within city limits anywhere in the world, the CM said.

“The State government has ensured that the rights of the tribal communities, stable owners and other stakeholders in the area are protected,” he said.

In another move likely to benefit Mumbaikars, Mr. Thackeray announced that Metro 3 and Metro 6 lines will be joined, facilitating direct connectivity of the eastern suburbs with south Mumbai.

The 33.5 km fully underground Metro-3 line, being constructed by Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd., runs from Colaba in south Mumbai to Seepz in the western suburbs.

The 14.47 km Metro 6 runs from Lokhandwala to Kanjurmarg.

At the peak of protests by environment activists, students and residents over construction of the car shed in Aarey, the proposed site was cleared with the cutting of trees in the dead of the night.

The Shiv Sena, which was then an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led ruling alliance in the State under Devendra Fadnavis, was vocal in its opposition to the construction.

Cases had been filed against several green activists, political workers and students who were detained for opposing the government action.

While Mr. Fadnavis remained undeterred, the Sena had promised to stop construction of the car shed if it came to power.

One of the first decisions of Mr. Thackeray, on being sworn in as head of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government last year, was to stop work on the car shed.

The government also appointed a committee to study feasibility of the project. Last month, the Cabinet initiated proceedings to declare the Aarey site as a forest area.

          Unfortunate, says Fadnavis
Mr. Fadnavis termed the decision unfortunate and one taken to satisfy the ruling party’s ego. “This decision will increase the cost of the project by at least ₹4,000 crore.

This cost escalation is assessed by the committee appointed by this government,” he said.

“The Kanjurmarg site was earlier considered by the government, but it was under litigation and stayed by the High Court.

Some private individuals claimed their rights and the stay was requested to be withdrawn.

However, the court wanted the amount to be deposited if the claims got settled in future,” said Mr. Fadnavis.

He said that the amount was around ₹2,400 crore in 2015.

“What is the status of that case today? And if someone moves the Supreme Court, who will be responsible for the delay?” he asked.

Moreover, since the site in Kanjurmarg is a marshy land, it will require at least two years to stabilise it, he added, claiming that all the previous tenders will have to be scraped and a new process will have to be followed now.

“This means that the Metro project, which would have been in the service of Mumbaikars just next year, has now been postponed indefinitely,” said the ex-CM.

          ‘Win for both’
Reacting to the announcement on Sunday afternoon, Environment minister Aaditya Thackeray said, “Aarey Saved”.

Opposition BJP said the Chief Minister’s claims were misleading. “The land in Kanjurmarg in under litigation.

The expert committee had recommended existing Aarey land for the project,” said BJP MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar.

Countering this, Minority Affairs Minister Nawab Malik of the Nationalist Congress Party and an MVA ally, said, “Maharashtra CM has made an announcement as he had promised during polls.

It is extremely wrong to question the authenticity of information he has provided.”

The move has been welcomed by environmental activists who thanked the MVA government.

“The blackmail of Aarey or Metro has finally ended. It’s a win for both Aarey and Metro today. We thank the government, especially CM and Environment Minister for the decision,” said Stalin D.

One of the leading green activists who had been fighting against the car shed and demanding that Aarey land be declared a forest.

          More why important ?

The rainforests of Amazon are known as the ‘lungs of the world.’ Mumbai’s Aarey Milk Colony, with its 1,300 hectares of forest land, is called the ‘last lung of Mumbai.’

On the one hand, the Amazon rainforests continue to burn, and on the other, Aarey forest is in danger. Cutting of trees and indiscriminate deforestation are not just issues of the present, they have long-term implications for the future.

Here’s everything you need to know about the importance of Aarey Forest.

Scramble for Milk, Land, and Oxygen
After India gained independence in 1947, the city of Mumbai was launched into a world of rapid expansion.

Known as the ‘city of dreams’, people from all over the country made their way to Mumbai to make money and name for themselves.

Historically, the city received a steady supply of agricultural produce from around the country. However, there were a few things that were locally sourced, including milk.

This drive for easily accessible milk resources led to the formation of the Aarey Milk Colony.

This piece of land was handed over to the Department of Dairy Development, and a small part of it was reserved for cattle rearing.

Proposed by Ramon Magsaysay Award winner Dara N. Khurody, the Aarey Milk Colony was brought into existence in 1949.

Then-Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru officially inaugurated Aarey by planting a sapling there in 1951 – he believed he was ‘planting the future.’

Has that tree even survived the multiple attempts to cut into Aarey over the last 70 years?

While the current drive to cut over 2,700 trees and clear 33 hectares or 2% of the forested land to accommodate the Metro car shed proposed by the MMRCL has invited the ire of many Indians, the truth is that this is not the first time that Aarey has been targeted.

In 1977, around 200 hectares of Aarey forest were cleared to make space for the Film City. In 2010, the proposed plan to expand the Byculla Zoo to include a night safari route for tourists was put into action.

A further 40 acres of forested land was cleared to accommodate this expansion.

          Where is the Air?
Greenpeace and IQAir AirVisual released their latest data in March 2019.

According to this data, Mumbai has the dubious honour of being the most polluted city in the state of Maharashtra, and the 27th most polluted city in the country.

The air quality within the city was measured as the worst in the last 20 years.

It is not just Aarey that is danger – it is Mumbai, the millions of hardworking people who call the city their home, and the teeming flora and fauna indigenous to Mumbai that is in immediate and deep danger.

The slow whittling away of forested land is how forests are diverted and destroyed.

The argument that the proposed deforestation clears a much lesser area than what has already been done before is a fallacious one because hacking away the tree cover in bits and pieces will not stop until Aarey forest, with its rich history, becomes history

          COVID-19 situation in Maharashtra

200 days after, experts dissect State and Centre’s decisions to contain the virus

You seem to imply the Maharashtra government is leading well.

They are not doing well. If you have to repress people you are not leading but dictating. Perhaps you are unfamiliar with the actually facts about Mumbai .

Pointing out that would not allow the relocation of Bollywood out of Mumbai and his party members would ensure such moves were foiled by taking appropriate steps as and when required.

Explaining stand on the film industry and drugs, I believe in providing no support to any drug-tainted actor.

“We don’t want any actor tainted in the drugs case to be given films. If that is done, then members of the party would spread across the state and country to ensure that the particular film is not be allowed to perform,”.

MVA govt failed to perform because of instability.

Failed to handle the Covid cases.

The Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in Maharashtra has failed to perform because of its unstable alliance and this is the reason why the government does not have funds to help farmers.

“It may be noted that there are three different parties at the helm of the state. As a result, The entire government has not been able to perform.

The state government had assumed office saying that farmers will have a clean ‘right of records’, which means, there will be no loans against them.

But the government was unable to perform and now the farmers are in deep trouble,” .

          • They are still unable to solve water and floods on roads even after a little rain.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will appoint a technical consultant to understand reasons for waterlogging in the city and suggest a permanent solution.

This year, BMC has pumped 17,145 million litres of water from Mumbai during waterlogging.

“We are appointing consultant for Mumbai to find a permanent solution to waterlogging in problematic spots. This will be an extensive survey, with special focus on chronic flooding spots and low-lying areas.

We need to check if a permanent solution can be found, such as deep tunnelling,” said a senior officer from the stormwater drains (SWD) department.

The consultant will have technical and engineering expertise in SWD along with prior experience of handling such projects. They will be given a list of chronic waterlogging spots, including Hindmata, Gandhi Market near Matunga, Chembur Colony and Andheri subway, for the study.

The decision comes on the back of allocating and spending dedicated budgets to find solutions to waterlogging at 273 spots across the city, over the last four years.

The officer said, “Despite our efforts, waterlogging happened in the city this year too.”

After the monsoon of 2018, BMC tried micro-planning to deal with flooding in the city and the SWD department was tasked with studying chronic flooding spots individually and come up with personalised solutions, in addition to cleaning water entrances and laterals, and desilting drains.

However, waterlogging has remained a recurring problem.

On August 4 and 5, Mumbai experienced very heavy rainfall and various parts of the city experienced severe waterlogging, including locations that usually do not see flooding, like Babulnath, Girgaum chowpatty and Nariman Point in south Mumbai.

Waterlogging was reported at nine prominent locations in the island city, four locations in the eastern suburbs, and three locations in the western suburbs.

As in 2019, the water took several hours to drain, though the flooding may be partially due to the city recording its highest ever August rainfall 1974 on August 5.

BMC’s 2020-21 budget allocated Rs 912.10 crore to the SWD department.

The civic body had declared that during the 2020 monsoon, only 24 waterlogging spots would remain since the rest had been dealt with over the past three years. SWD department has spent Rs 2,903.28 crore for capital expenditures including repair and cleaning of drains and water laterals, nullah desilting, widening, repairing manholes, etc, between 2016 and 2019.

However, during the lockdown, BMC lost out on crucial months for its monsoon-preparedness work and was unable to complete fixing over 40 waterlogging spots.

          • Tragedy of errors

“Take the examples of South Korea or Kerala, where the entire focus was on intensive

        • Good at everything apart from controlling Covid and Floods in Mumbai.

Let’s see Arnab and Republic as the best INDIA has got in a media House.

  10. I dont watch Republic TV Channel at all. It is more rabble rousing than anything worthwhile. The point still remains that BJP has also also treated Journalists opposed to them badly. Just see the situation in UP State and the number of Journalists behind bars.
Just see the condition of the ailing , Father Samy who is lodged at the Taloja Jail by NIA. The 83 year old father is suffering from Parkinsons disease. He requested the Hon. HC to allow him to use Straw while drinking liquids. HC requested NIA to file a reply. NIA wanted 21 days to reply. Comments are superfluous.
While in Power, the UPA also resorted to similar tactics to cow down opponents.

  11. Haha, Support journalism means you should stand with Arnab, Arnab is speaking the truth and people like you are running your own Agenda.
    We will not forgive you.

  12. In your hatred for Hindu/Modi/BJP, you have started justifying even atrocities on their supporters. I will never read you again.

    • Exactly. The State Govt is using Police as an instrument. And don’t forget Arnab does his home work. Some people favouring the MVA have written Ramayana like essay’s in support. As if that will hide the high handed ness. HC too is playing delaying game. Lekin Janta sab jaanti hai.

  13. The author seems to be a caricature as far as a journalist is concerned. He depicted the whole story like PA and main spokesperson of Uddhav Thakrey. He is glorifying UT and this stupid government like a sena member. UT is basically a stupid, weak CM and he is digging his own and Congress’s grave in Maharashtra by this height of stupidity. The only party getting benefitted by his acts is NATIONAL CORRUPT PARTY (NCP). It’s an open secret that all cards are being played by them and UT is only a puppet in their hands. He is destroying the legacy of late Sri Balasaheb Thakrey very rapidly. Mumbai and Maharashtra people are totally irritated and fed up with him and this government.

  14. It should be clear to everybody from reading Shivam Vij that secus are not concerned with any principles. Freedom of press is simply their tool. It is obvious that to them loud conspiracy idea floating from wire is freedom of press but not criticizing Congress backed government.

In short moral standard of Shivam vij are that of women from house of ill-fame.

      • it is not Arnab my friend but ordinary people of India who are nationalists . Any move to undermine Arnab or physically harm, , will backfire badly . The state with all the police will be up against us. whoever wants to use it as a Marathi vs outsider, let them try, We will ensure that all who stand by the Uddhav coward, will meet its downfall, the jerk is fooling some on Marathi card, but that will not deter us because even those fools will go down with Uddhav.

  15. I was a big fan of shri balasaheb.. Even before modi was in Indian politics. But udhav made me think whether he is a real maratha licking corrupt congress just for power

  16. It’s Arnabs Karma which haunts him. It’s not fair media. It’s biased and clear BJP agenda. It will be interesting to note how will BJP bail him out. Suprisingly it has done nothing except for verbal support typical of politicians. I hope best for Arnab and hope he doesn’t fall prey to political fights atleast be careful in misbehaving with Shivsena and Sharad Pawar in Mumbai.

  17. I came to this site searching news coverage for today’s hearing of Arnab case. I find a genuine report of today’s proceedings. However I found this article which is very much misleading to say Arnab communalise sadhu linking to Muslims – no he linked it to politics there which is anti Hindu. Communists and gang.
I was thinking of contributing and support you by one time donation, but this author just sucks and taps rubbish, and you have lost it as an editor

  18. Arnab must learn a lesson, because he is taking things to another level, but on the other hand, the day you guys get arrested then the HEADLINES will be different and that will be “Media freedom of speech” So shut the **** up

  19. The Maharastra govt. has done a great job by arresting Arnab, a mad barking dog. A mad dog can’t be let roaming free. Instead it should be kept within for better treatment!!!

  20. Would it not be a lot better if Shri Gupta frees Shri Shivam Vij from the pain of turning up an article at regular intervals and let him join any anti BJP party of his choice? At least we would be spared of the pain of having to put up with a pamphleteer masquerading as a journalist.

  21. Nicely put. Uddhav is a courageous leader. He has been a revelation. I was disappointed when he hoodwinked BJP by becoming CM. But I think he is giving it back really good and had handled Covid crisis reasonably. He is leader to watch out for.

  22. hey !!!! are nt u tired of canvassing for the politicians. when rahul was making with videos during pandemic you canvassed him,,, phir kisi aur ko ( dynast) ab ek aur dynast ko…… kya miya

  23. Wrong.. when khainar made false allegation against pawar in 1994 ..first he got transfered from his role and in month he got sacked from his job.

Before making any comments ..why don’t you think about 2 ladies who lost her 2 beloved family members are fighting since 2 years for justice. Bjp government had trashed the case to save Arab. Those ladies should get justice

Nobody in maharashtra like Goswamy. Because of him and the agenda of Bjp.. in maharashtra image of Bjp becoming anti marathi party. Nobody like Bjp now maharashtra. This whole incident passed message like news media and Bjp defaming maharashtra and Mumbai police. After ssr case handover to cbp and no conclusion after 2 months ..it’s passed strong anti bjp message in maharashtra

Considering the nature of shiv sena to energies it’s base …decision is right and message is clear

Udhav popularity is growing by this decision in magarashtra

    • I live in Maharashtra. And I don’t see that’s the case. After the Arnab Goswami case, general public is more upset with Uddhav Thackrey. The popularity of Shiv Sena is rapidly going downhill now.

    • AS IT GREW SO IT FALL.

No skills to manag the crucial situation. It’s just a trick of trade he could have used. JUST COME TO ARNAB SHOW. Things would have settled.

ARNAB WILL BE BACK. BACK BIGGER, BRIGHTER AND POWERFUL. Just wait n watch.

  24. Are you saying it’s ok to witchhunt? Two wrongs dont make a right…opening 15 cases dont make you a hero. It shows your desperation …you may not agree to way of reporting or journalism but is it right for anyone to be hunted like this?

  25. I salute Uddhav Thackeray ……. Arman thought no one is better them him ….. The world used to view his dirty actions and comments made …. He gave no respect to humans ….. Inviting people for his debates and he only used to bark …. Cheers Mumbai …. Anab cheated and a poor man had to suicide …. Person of indecent exposure to humans ….

  26. Typical view by Sonia-Sena because they cannot stand the heat.Udhav is the chief goonda and sends thugs to beat up a retired naval officer, demolish Kanganas rauts office, free speech is curtailed by locking up Arnab? What elase is left?Marthis should ashamed since nobody is rising to deplore what Aghadi is doing.

    • Marathi people are not ashamed but proud of the actions of Uddhav Thackeray in protecting Marathi family of Naik. Also they don’t give a damn to Kangana.

  27. Cheap journalism by print and its employees..news channels now circulate their own agenda..i feel like m watching saas bahu serial

  28. HELLO SHIVAM SIR, I LIKE TO READ YOUR ARTICLES . I THINK WITH THE ARREST OF ARNAB GOSWAMI , SHIV SENA HAS INDIRECTLY SENT A STRONG MESSAGE TO MANY MODI BHAKTS NEWS CHANNELS THAT THE SAME THING CAN HAPPEN WITH THEM TOO. ARNAB WAS FLYING TOO HIGH AND USING CHEAP WORDS FOR HIS LOW CLASS JOURNALISM. HE GOT WHAT HE DESERVED FROM LONG TIME.

  29. Author of this article is a cockeyed thinking guy who instead of criticising Sonia Sena Govt. unethical & unlawful act; explaining in terms of politics. Unfortunately, we have many Jaychands & Mir Zafars in India now & this is hindering progress for better India. Most of such people are in it for self aggrandisement for money. PRINT is famous to prop-up these anti-nationals. Same chaps will be shouting at the top of their voices, if likes of Akhtar or Khan or Nasir is jailed by BJP Govt. Why are the AWARD VAPASI gang quite? What about Lutyen’s presstitutes?

    • I suppose by bringing Jaychand and Mir Jafar into picture, you have assumed the role of Rani Laxmibai or Tatyarao Tope. Why don’t you show us the right path O great lord !

  30. “Haraam khor Ladki”.
    Jabda tood denge.
And now harrassing Republic TV and it’s 1000 staff.

    What bravery & daring!!

  31. A leader? A politician?
Only a weak & insecure street goonda who suddenly wakes up & finds himself in power will do what has been done to Arnab Goswami.
Is anyone going to ever vote for these thugs again?

  32. Sad that politicians have to reinvent themselves with matters other than Governance. It is more damning, that one way or the other, the media is complicit in such drama.
Do you think the media can play a more positive and constructive role in Nation building. Yes, I mean that now the media in general is playing to the gallery and not helping matters.

    • Your writing is laced with doublespeak.

‘Do you think the media can play a more positive and constructive role in Nation building. Yes, I mean that now the media in general is playing to the gallery and not helping matters.’

Do you mean The Print should not criticise Arnob ?

  33. Hi Print Team,
Why are you so bias always criticize Modi n BJP.? According to they are biggest villian. Incident happened at Raigarh was correct according to you. If any Mulla had died. You people taken earth on your head.

  34. Shameful that Print is supporting the arrest, Shekar Gupta is commuting a mistake by not opposing the arrest of Arnab, the same will become norm and all media houses will be treated like Republic…..

  35. It will be fun to watch you being tortured in jail. We will talk about the courage of the government and the hatefulness of Shivam Vij

  36. great biased article.. May your master (Indian or foreign) shower you with all the . You deserve the greatest honour and medal for showcasing utter disregard for law and criminal intimidation by state agencies as strength … If Bjp does to you editor will you write this article again . Nice to see Logic falling behind agenda.. Soon your time will also come . as these thing continue. waiting for you time .
