As we observe the 46th year anniversary of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation war, we have to deal with our military past with genuine scholarship, not jingoism.
A controversial Facebook post about Islam recently prompted angry Muslim mobs to go on a rampage setting buildings on fire and clash with the police in West Bengal, killing a 65-year-old Hindu man. Retaliatory Hindu mobs burnt down the dargah and shops owned by Muslims. Who is responsible for this communal tinderbox? We ask experts.
Narendra Modi's intervention is needed in land boundary agreement India and Bangladesh signed since the matter rests with BJP and is caught within its messy but utterly transparent, internal power tussle.
The issue of the Muslim quota has the potential to polarise SCs, STs, and OBCs along religious lines in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. It benefits the BJP.
Germany’s erstwhile Christian Democratic Union govt, led by Angela Merkel, prevented sale of small arms to police forces in states they perceived had ‘bad human rights record’.
A theme has not yet emerged for BJP & people see lack of a contest, which makes it unexciting. For all these reasons, 2024 is turning out to be an unexpectedly theme-less election.
H.S. Panag couldn’t have been a major in that war. Probably a lieutenant. Get your history right Mr Shekhar. Otherwise a well written & informative piece.
Totally agree that jingoism & national Security are totally different. Sadly this hasn’t been understood by many in this country.
I feel very happy that, barring Kargil, India has been at peace since 1971. Think of the value of just one large oil refinery cum petrochemical complex near the border to realise how costly even a short, conventional war could be, for both sides.
Shekhar, Good article. I hope you to see you write about the 1971 hijacking of the plane Ganga of the indian airlines flight, from Srinagar to Jammu. The hijackers took the plane to Lahore. Regards,
