The British were foreign occupiers, and we obtained “Azaadi” in 1947 only. There were people both then and now who think otherwise, but they form a fringe minority. The excesses committed by law enforcement authorities are condemnable, and accountability must be demanded from the govt regarding that. Countless lawyers in this country fight for the rights of dissenters and bring justice to those who suffered those police excesses.
What troubles me is that people, whom I thought sane-minded, are now openly supporting the violent actions of the protesters, including the obscene slogans, and fully ignoring the audacity of an act like marching to the parliament, disregarding security concerns. Things like these cannot be justified as dissent in a nation like ours. Excesses do happen in protests, and the citizens enjoy the fruit of the outcomes brought through such protests. But the outcomes do not justify the excesses, whichever side they may come from, and the participants must be held accountable for that.
There was no foreign interference in mediaeval India.
