Ayodhya: The construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya is an instrument to unite the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said after laying the foundation stone for the temple at Wednesday’s bhoomi pujan ceremony. He added that 5 August should be considered as important a date as 15 August, Independence Day.

“Ram is everywhere, Ram belongs to all,” said Modi, who began his speech with the greeting ‘Jai Siya Ram’.

Modi termed the upcoming Ram Janmabhoomi temple as a “modern symbol of our culture, eternal faith and national spirit”, and stressed on the need of “sabka saath, sabka vishwas”.

“Whenever humanity believed and followed Ram’s path, there was progress. When there were diversions from the path, there was destruction. We have to bind the foundations of the Ram Mandir in the bond of mutual brotherhood. We must keep everyone’s feelings in mind, must ensure sabka saath, sabka vishwas,” he said, adding that this was the way to achieve his stated goal of ‘sabka vikas’ or development for all.

“I am deliberately using the word modern. This temple will be a symbol of our faith, our nationalism and our collective resolve,” he said.

5 August as important as 15 August

Explaining why the date of the bhoomi pujan of the Ram Mandir should be considered on a  par with Independence Day, Modi said: “During our freedom struggle everyone sacrificed for our freedom. Just as 15 August symbolises the end of our struggle for freedom, where the entire country played its part, for the Ram Mandir, people have made a number of sacrifices and struggled. And today symbolises the culmination of the fight for a Ram Mandir for centuries.”

The PM termed it an emotional moment for the nation. “The entire country is excited and emotional today. The wait of centuries is ending today. Many are not even able to believe that they are witnessing this day.”

He added that efforts were made to erase the existence of Ram, but the deity resides in everyone’s hearts.

“We have looked towards Lord Ram whenever we have to do something. A lot of efforts were made to destroy Lord Ram’s identity, but he still reigns in our hearts,” Modi said, saying the temple will serve as a symbol of national sentiment, collective faith and will teach us love and dedication.

Harmony and plurality

Modi also said the temple would prove to be a bridge and connect the entire country, and that it signifies truth and sacrifice. The prime minister stressed that Ram is the thread of India’s unity in diversity.

Ramayan is written in all languages… you go to Tamil Nadu you find one version, you go to Kashmir you find another,” he said.

“Indonesia, which has the maximum Muslim population in the world, has a unique Ramayan. Lord Ram is still worshipped there,” he said, elaborating on the different traditions of the Ramayan in Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia.

He also said references to the Ramayan can also be found in Iran and China. “Sri Lanka has its own Ramayan and Nepal’s tradition is attached to Mata Janaki (Sita, Ram’s wife),” he said.

“This is an opportunity to connect people with faith, and also connect the present with the past. It is a gift to justice-loving India. The Supreme Court gave a landmark Ayodhya verdict, and people behaved in harmony,” he said.

Social unity

Modi stressed that with the construction of the temple, history was being repeated.

“The way boatmen and tribals helped Lord Ram, the way children helped Lord Krishna lift the Govardhan mountain… Similarly, with everyone’s efforts, the temple’s construction will be completed,” he said.

“Just as every section of the society including Dalits and tribals, extended support to Gandhi ji during the freedom struggle, today every section has supported the Ram Mandir. Ram inspired people in all eras; he also inspired Gandhi. There is no field in which Ram doesn’t inspire us,” the PM added.

Tributes to Ram Janmabhoomi movement

Modi’s party, the BJP, was closely associated with the Ram Janmabhoomi movement in the 1990s, and he himself was visiting Ayodhya after 29 years.

He highlighted that the Ram Janmabhoomi has become liberated from the cycle of breaking down and building up again, and that a grand temple for Ram Lalla would be constructed in place of tents now.

“For years, Lord Ram lived under a tent… a centuries-long wait comes to an end,” he said.

Paying tribute to all those who “sacrificed” their lives in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, Modi added: “We got soil and water from all over India for the temple. India’s faith helped win this fight… India’s faith is a matter of research for the world.”

He stressed that the temple would boost the economy of the region.

“We are building a Ram circuit in Ram’s own city. The Ram temple will help the economy of this region. Not only will Ayodhya gain importance, but the entire economy will be transformed, as it will see people from across the world coming in,” he said.

‘Maryada’ in time of Covid

Modi also used Ram’s reputation of ‘maryada’ (dignity) to drive home the point that amid the Covid-19 pandemic, people need to behave responsibly.

He said the new ‘maryada’ needs to be: “Do gaz ki doori, mask hai zaroori.”

  1. We believe in our leader Modiji and we Hindus will keep marching till we destroy all mosques that are built on temple grounds.

  2. Namaskaaram Ram Janma Bhummi Foundation for the SREE RAM TEMPLE , As a nation and in particular as Hindus we should dedicate ourselves on this momentous day to steadfastly lead a life with ‘Yeyka pathni vrathaa’ attitude in letter and spirit in thought, word and deed both before and after marriage giving all around free space to the females at all times in a day and in all places and everywhere. My daughter wanted to me to say specifically irrespective of caste and creed, this should become a benchmark for assessing the behavior. Namaskaaram

  3. preposterous to compare august 15. the temple built by demolishing another religious structure and over the blood and lives of innocent hindus as well as muslims marks the beginning of sowing the seeds of majoritarian theocratic state. and values. what values? asking Sita mai to undergo agnipariksha in the name of satisfying public opinion and then again banish her to the forests. killing Vali stealthily from behind trees, Killing Sambhukan a shudra for daring to learn the Vedas, winning over drohi Vibhishana to kill Ravana promising the kingdom. and upholding the chaturvarna system . even mythologically these are all values which does not fit in into the modern constitutional republican values. and goes against all cannon of moral behaviour and vlaues.

  4. Lord Ram is a mythological creature and who was not a very good husband so this belief that Lord Ram is in all Indians is wrong. Lord Ram is not real nor was he ever real. He is a made up character written by human beings to control other human beings based on the horrible caste system! India will continue to suffer under this mythological belief system!

  5. Social unity? How can there be social unity when the party in power provides a temple over a destroyed mosque? Hatred for one religion will never work. Love of others is the only solution!

  6. With the subjugation of the Press, Media, Institutions, Judiciary (quick appointment of a retd. Justice Gogoi to the RS), rapid extinction of opposition Govts. in the States we’re getting closer to RS nos. where the Constitution can be changed from a Parliamentary System to a Presidential one enabling DIRECT election of Shree, Shree 108 NDM to that August office (Isn’t that the whole point of Man ke baat, to have “the name”on everyone’s lips?).
Otherwise how could anyone have the cheek to declare 5th August at the same level as 15th August? That, too, with only about 36% of the vote?
Hé Prabhu, ab tu hi hai mera!
