New Delhi: An advertisement by Titan Group’s Tanishq Jewellery featuring an interfaith married couple has received severe backlash on Twitter, with ‘#BoycottTanishq’ among the top trends Monday.
More than 17,000 people tweeted with the hashtag calling for a ban on the advertisement and a boycott of the jewellery brand.
The advertisement, which was released on 9 October, shows a Muslim family preparing a traditional Hindu baby shower for their pregnant Hindu daughter-in-law.
Several users on the site accused the jewellery brand of promoting ‘love jihad and ‘fake secularism’ through the advertisement.
Following the backlash the YouTube link for the ad was made private, making it unavailable for people to view it.
‘Love jihad’ is a term coined by Hindu fundamentalist groups to refer to an alleged campaign by Muslims to convert Hindu girls in the guise of love.

Promotion for new jewellery line
The advertisement by Tanishq promoted a new jewellery line called ‘Ekatvam‘.
In the 45-second advertisement, members of a Muslim family can be seen celebrating a traditional Hindu ceremony for their daughter-in-law who appears to be a South Indian.
The ceremony is called Seemantham or Valaikaapu where first-time mothers or recently-expecting mothers are given gold ornaments and food, and at times sandalwood is applied on their hands and faces, to pray for her safe delivery and happy life. It is typically celebrated in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Telangana.
The description of the video on YouTube also notes, “She is married into a family that loves her like their own child. Only for her, they go out of their way to celebrate an occasion that they usually don’t. A beautiful confluence of two different religions, traditions, cultures.”
The video has got more dislikes than likes on YouTube, with more than 2,000 people disliking the video and only 545 people liking it. The comments section has been disabled.
In the past, a Surf excel advertisement had also received backlash after it sought to promote its brand showing Hindu-Muslim harmony. Those criticising the advertisement called it “Hindu-phobic” and that it promoted “love jihad”.

I just now ended up watching “Gandhi”, what a marvelous film it was! So my current thoughts might be influenced by the message conveyed in the movie.
Just suppose, all the ideas propagated anywhere in our country, would just be like the one shown in the advertisement, how our India would look like then? From what knowledge I have, since I have payed very less attention to those propagandas which make people cynical of non-native religion, I saw the message to be a clear cut promotion of secularism defying what might be the current widespread notions that are there, which for the fact I liked very much.
So, I must summarize that probably the problem is with the lense through with one is watching or has watched the advertisement based on past notions and prejudice, afterall one small video clip of 3 minutes won’t change anyone’s psyche.

Selective abortions and infanticide of the female is a serious problem in India and they are equally prevalent in all religions. Islam, sadly, is no exception – Quranic injunctions notwithstanding.

Clearly, foeticide of the female child is a complex phenomenon with a number of factors at play. A non-exhaustive list would include:
Economic factors such as access to employment and poverty levels
Inheritance laws
Socio-ritual factors (e.g sons are needed to perform last rites in all religions in India)
Technology availability
Government policy such as India’s 2 child policy
Education levels
Household income
These circumstances impact adherents of all religions, including the many Muslims and Christians who are converts from Hinduism and follow many – if not most – Hindu rituals. It is therefore preposterous of you to claim Muslims are better than Hindus when it comes to infanticide. Indeed, I have been in several court cases in Europe where immigrant Pakistani defendants were accused of foeticide by taking the pregnant woman back to Pakistan for the abortion.
BOTTOMLINE: There are very little differences between the major Indian religions when it comes to selective foeticide of the female foetus. There are however regional differences between North India and South India. Foeticide factors are many and religion has the least explanatory value.

I noticed something. About a fictional Hindu-Muslim advert of a couple, there are over 300 posts by outraged caste Hindus. About the rape and murder and cremation of Hindu Dalit girls by caste Hindus, there were 10 posts in The Print.

In Hindu families, if a couple has a female infant, there is pressure to indulge in infanticide – even foeticide. This is highest amongst Hindus in north India, and lowest amongst Muslims. No woman likes to kill their baby. A Hindu girl might figure that her children who maybe female would be safe in a Muslim family.

Hello to anyone reading this, I felt that the ad was pretty wholesome I personally can’t understand the backlash that it is receiving and the toxicity in the comments here. Some years back the people in my country weren’t like this, they were humane sure there were some bad Apples and my country had issues but which country doesn’t? I remember things were decent. But ever since the saffron brigade came to the scene with their chest thumping and shit shoveling things have started to go down hill. I am an atheist from an atheist house hold born and brought up in india. I have a lot of hindu friends all lovely human beings, nothing like the cretins you see here.
