New Delhi: An advertisement by Titan Group’s Tanishq Jewellery featuring an interfaith married couple has received severe backlash on Twitter, with ‘#BoycottTanishq’ among the top trends Monday.
More than 17,000 people tweeted with the hashtag calling for a ban on the advertisement and a boycott of the jewellery brand.
The advertisement, which was released on 9 October, shows a Muslim family preparing a traditional Hindu baby shower for their pregnant Hindu daughter-in-law.
Several users on the site accused the jewellery brand of promoting ‘love jihad and ‘fake secularism’ through the advertisement.
Following the backlash the YouTube link for the ad was made private, making it unavailable for people to view it.
‘Love jihad’ is a term coined by Hindu fundamentalist groups to refer to an alleged campaign by Muslims to convert Hindu girls in the guise of love.

ThePrint reached Tanishq’s public relations officer for a comment via email but did not receive a response till the time of publishing of this report.

Promotion for new jewellery line
The advertisement by Tanishq promoted a new jewellery line called ‘Ekatvam‘.
In the 45-second advertisement, members of a Muslim family can be seen celebrating a traditional Hindu ceremony for their daughter-in-law who appears to be a South Indian.
The ceremony is called Seemantham or Valaikaapu where first-time mothers or recently-expecting mothers are given gold ornaments and food, and at times sandalwood is applied on their hands and faces, to pray for her safe delivery and happy life. It is typically celebrated in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Telangana.
The description of the video on YouTube also notes, “She is married into a family that loves her like their own child. Only for her, they go out of their way to celebrate an occasion that they usually don’t. A beautiful confluence of two different religions, traditions, cultures.”
The video has got more dislikes than likes on YouTube, with more than 2,000 people disliking the video and only 545 people liking it. The comments section has been disabled.
In the past, a Surf excel advertisement had also received backlash after it sought to promote its brand showing Hindu-Muslim harmony. Those criticising the advertisement called it “Hindu-phobic” and that it promoted “love jihad”.

Ms LiaMiorza Basuroy: I fully agree with you that Rasgolla uses the comments section to spew hatred towards Hindus and Hinduism. And yes, the moderators need to do something about this bigoted Nazi’s hate-speech. It is a pity that they have allowed this thug to continue as long as he has done.
But I have a more nuanced take on this issue:
1. The Print should publish the terms and conditions and the code of conduct (CoC) that ALL commenters have to abide by. By code of conduct I mean use of hate speech, vulgar language, denigration of people on the basis of their religion, gender, ethnicity, region etc. etc.
2. The Moderators should scrutinise comments to enforce the CoC and remove comments that violate these norms.
And, yes, Rasgolla is a Hindu hating, Hindu baiting modern day amalgamation of Adolf Hitler, Osama bin Laden, Ajmal Qasab and Donald Trump. But does he have a monopoly on hate speech in these columns? Absolutely not. There are enough Hindutva types who use the comments section to shower their hate on Muslims and even Sikhs. Which is why we need a code of conduct.
Finally, rather than impose a blanket ban on a commenter, I suggest that only individual comments that are in breach of the CoC be removed.

Hard to decipher your English but I will give it a shot. I have always considered my written English to be extremely poor but reading your comment has given me hope though…
You make the ludicrous claim that I am on a:

Fact is, there is no such thing as “Hindu unity” or “Muslim Unity” or “Christian Unity” or for that matter even an “Indian Unity”. All religions, all over the world are fractured along sectarian, denominational, racial, linguistic and ethnic lines. In South Asia i.e. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, religious identity is further fractured along caste lines. Including in supposedly caste free Islam and Christianity.
You see these fissures both in India and also in the NRI communities. Bal Thackeray’s Shiv Sena attacked the largely Hindu South Indian community – the so-called “kaala madraasis” in Bombay in the 70s and 80s; people in Karnataka and Tamilnadu fought over Cauvery waters with religion being no unifier; Assam sees strife between Bengalis and Assamese; upper caste Thakurs fight Dalits in the black holes of BIMARU; Shia and Sunnis fight, often violently; various Sikh communities have been at loggerheads as well.
A common faith i.e. Islam did not prevent fair-skinned Punjabi Muslims from W. Pakistan perpetrating in genocide upon dark-skinned Muslims in erstwhile E.Pakistan. Just as Christianity does not unify Americans – whites and blacks worship in different, segregated churches. Religion has seldom brought about unity and never will.
As an NRI, you see that in action outside India too. Indians primarily mingle and socialise along language lines with religion being less of a factor when socialising. Indeed, cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu, a Sikh, said that that he felt more at home in Muslim majority Pakistan than in Kerala in India.
