Imran Khan is binge-watching Ertuğrul during Covid, recommending Turkish shows to Pakistanis

To say that Pakistan’s roots lie in India is borderline blasphemy. We are first Arabs or Turks. So it’s not a surprise that Pakistanis have localised Ertuğrul.

One has to feel for the leaders trying to contain the spread of coronavirus or worrying about their country’s position in the new world order that the current pandemic will create in its aftermath. Because in a parallel universe, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan is binge-watching Turkish drama serials and giving us recommendations.

Oh, the luxury of someone else running the country for you.

Imran Khan is smitten by the period drama Diriliş: Ertuğrul, upon which he has showered lavish praise, much to the dismay of Pakistani filmmakers who crave for their PM to promote their projects. But Imran Khan’s love for the historical-adventure series, which has been billed as a ‘Turkish Game of Thrones’, is cultural.

He says “our children and youth” should watch Ertuğrul, so that they can learn to differentiate between the real Islamic culture and the “third-hand” one that reaches Pakistan via Hollywood and Bollywood. “It (the Turkish show) also has romance, history… (and) has Islamic values.” That was a five-star review from the PM, and Turkey duly noted it.

But wait, don’t be so quick to tune into your Bollywood or Hollywood favourite after dutifully watching Diriliş: Ertuğrul. The PM has another Turkish serial recommendation for you — Yunus Emre: Aşkin Yolculuğu. If you are too American to mind the subtitles, then the PM has decided to get the show dubbed in Urdu. In time, he will have more suggestions.

Sharing Islamic history with Turk Ertuğrul

So, what’s the fuss about Diriliş: Ertuğrul? Titled Ghazi Ertuğrul, the dubbed version of the show running on Pakistan Television is based on the life of 12th century Oghuz Turk, Ertuğrul (whose son Osman Gazi founded the Ottoman Empire). The series documents the valour of Muslim Oghuz Turks fighting and invading the Mongols, Christians and the Knights Templars in Anatolia. The show is a hit among period-adventure buffs in many countries. In Pakistan, it knocked PM Khan’s socks off because of what he often describes as ‘a shared Islamic history’ (if at all there is such a thing). Ever since his promotional speech, Ertuğrul has been creating waves in Pakistan.

But is the latest craze good for a country whose people are perpetually embroiled in discussions, debates and confusion over who their national heroes are? All that the show does is add another entry to the list: Ghazi Ertuğrul. Only last week Pakistanis were trying to choose between Muhammad bin Qasim and Raja Dahir.

Even though we revere the Afghan emperors — we named our nuclear missiles Ghauri, Abdali and Ghaznavi after them — we still smear Pashtuns who take pride in their Afghan heritage. To say that Pakistan’s roots lie in India is borderline blasphemy, for we are first Arabs or Turks and only then Pakistanis. In the national discourse, heritage is a blurred line and the idea of shared religious history has many takers.

So it doesn’t come as a surprise that Pakistanis have owned Ertuğrul. Guess what, now Ertuğrul will free Kashmir for them. Basically, we just need someone else to do our work and then bask in its glory once it’s done.

In the company of Ertuğrul

Like they say, no publicity is bad, so the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government is hell-bent on promoting Imran Khan as Pakistan’s Ertuğrul. Not that Khan sahib himself has to fight political opponents and invade hidden adversaries; most of his work is done by those who actually run the country. But this is 2020, and Ertugrul has to be on the same page as his selectors.

Taking the matter a bit too far was Ali Muhammad Khan, state minister of parliamentary affairs, who tweeted a photo praying to Allah to bring back the ‘golden era of Muslims’. In the photo, Imran Khan (as Ertuğrul) was flocked by Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa and DG ISI Faiz Hameed. Other ministers were in the background. The post was taken down as some thought the order of men in the poster might not be what it perhaps is in reality.

After constant calls for donating to the PM’s relief fund, it seems promoting Turkish serials is the only job left for the PTI government.

Not a Turkish Delight

It is not for the first time that a Turkish serial has been dubbed for Pakistani audiences. In 2012, Turkish drama Ishq-e-Mamnoon (Ask-i Memnu)  or ‘The Forbidden Love’ became a rage in the country. The story revolving around a modern family and incestuous relationships changed the dynamics of viewership. Turks dressed in Western clothes with modern outlook were a revelation for Pakistani viewers. Similarly, Mera Sultan (Muhtesem Yüzyil), an extravagant historical show, or a low-budget Fatima Gul, about the life of a gang-rape survivor, changed the landscape of drama industry. Turkish productions were banned soon after because of local industry opposition.

Like then, even now local artists aren’t happy about Pakistan importing foreign dramas and not promoting its own serials, considering how Pakistani dramas have been loved and watched by people in the country and elsewhere. Actor Shan Shahid expressed his concern about PM Imran Khan  promoting and helping import Turkish serials instead of empowering local talent and own national heroes.

While everyone is free to watch any content they wish to, it is somewhat problematic when the government promotes foreign serials, and uses public broadcaster to push a myopic sense of belonging.

Pakistanis have taken Ertuğrul’s history to heart and genuinely started believing that the 12th century Turk belongs to them. If the Instagram moral policing of leading actors is anything to go by, then Halime Hatun is Halima baji now and Astaghfirullah she needs to behave like a Muslim woman from the 12th century.

And just in case you miss it, Ertuğrul is hanging out with his dog. How is that even possible, bro? Don’t you know dogs are haram in Islam? But Pakistanis don’t care about all that. As Imran Khan once told us that he is “half Muhajir”, his followers have taken it a notch higher — they are on their way to becoming ‘full Ertuğrul’.

  1. What a low life , pretentious article written by half literate woman. India and Pakistan share everything from food, culture, language, names, surnames and common heritage. They are bruttaly converted from their Hindu and Buddhist roots. They have nothing in common with Turkey apart from the fact that they too follow Islam. That means if any Tribal leader who got converted to Christianity in India share same roots as someone who was converted to Christianity in Oceania? How cheesy and wannabe Pakistanis are and it only proves shallow knowledge of this article owner.

  2. Naila Inaiyat actually want is Pakistanis esp. Muslims must get into insecurity by watching Bollywood movies like Bajirao Mastani, Panipat, Padmavaat, Tanhaji, Kesari .. and thousand other hindi films in which Muslims are villians & losers , Muslim women are rescued by Hindu men from bad muslim men. This is agenda of Sangh Parivar RSS organisation, & you know who will be frustrated if Muslims watch serials in which they are projected fair /good winners? Exactly

  3. Madam you please watch half naked vulgar dance from Indian films and watch intimidate sex scenes from American films in your house with your babies.. Good luck!

    • chances are that this writer ‘Nalaik ‘ is linked to that imbecile Tareq Fatty or is Tareq Fatty. How the Indians latch onto anyone that’s anti Muslim or Pakistani. Yet when an Indian speaks against the bakhts they accuse them of being anti national.

  4. Turkish serials are very well made. They do not highlight religion and fanatics…keeping religious practices in vogue. They are great story tellers…I find the trends leaning more towards regional Indian cinema rather than commercial bollywood. Pakistan itself has very good serials which shows there are more moderates than extremists that their PM is inclined.

  5. Ajeeb ho the print wat u want ro say.. Sickualr media..wat conceen wid series wid pakistan to turkish to us as indians…are u promoting islam are u a broker of it

  6. To say Pakistan roots lie in India is border blasphemy, we are first arabs and turks. If you can be soo stupid… Wow…. Tell me, why Pakistan culture is same as India, the language, the festivals, the dressing sense, why not like arab and turks… Just stop misleading…. Pakistanis were first Hindus who were converted by persians to Islam.

    • By sticking a Muslim name and writing in Urdu is a good propaganda tool. we are far more secure in our identity, worry about the difference in the northern and southern Indian states, a nation creation be the colonial power, a hitch porch of different languages and cultures as well as ethnicities and you have the tenacity to accuse pakistanis of not having a shared identity. Really?

    • a lie that your Sadhus came up with, the Muslim conversion came when the sufis came to South Asia, as the India we know today did not exist, at that that time there were many states so could you please get rid of this delusion of india as some monolithic state that has existed since time immemorial, even the name ‘india’ was concocted by the British, You are merely using the same language as used my white Christian supremacists, that Islam was spread by the sword, this has been debunked not just by historians but by the ground reality that there are large Christian communities in Egypt, Syria and Iraq to name a few, existing from a thousand years.
The real question is what the Hindus did to the Buddhists and what you are doing against the minorities in India.

  8. Talking about local industry and producers and their projects, to be honest, be it Indian or Pakistani entertainment, it’s mostly filled with crap. Same stupidity lasting for years in dramas and movies, same year ishq mohabbat, villain, tallaq, thappar aur aur ashiq o mashooq, ghuma lhira ke wohi Baker topics. Indian movies moving around power of love, and love can anything, sure fill your tummy with love and give your food to someone, and then I will ask if you are satisfied. And Pakistani entertainment, filled with jagga, daako, villain, Shan ki moonchen, ajeeb se dance, and dramas filled with so much ‘creativity’. I must say this crap is really revolving around the same dot and more bullshit is coming out of these topics. Maybe it’s time for them to revive and think in new paradigms?

Talking about dahir and Mohammad bin Qasim(rta), you are free t ok choose your heroes. This topic was bolstered by people who are not even local. Note the the origin of ‘Syed’ Murad Ali SHAH. I hope you know what I mean, or Google a bit about it.

Talking about the originals before arabs came to sindh, who were Aryans? When they came to this region, destroyed local culture like gandhara, were did these aryans came from? So even local community person is not really local. 😀

    • Aryan bs is a theory not a fact. There is no proof on the ground And gandhara was a sub region. Destroyed gandhara ? By whom? ???? Madrasa is full of illiteracy.

And for Syed , his face shows how much Arab he is. Have blood test, Syeds in Indian subcontinent are fake wannabe Arab.

    • Biland
In india Muslim grew to 200 million due to tolerance of Hindus inspite of getting two islamic state.
Pakistani terrorists are claiming to be Hospitable bcoz abhinandan said tea was fantastic then what about 93000 rapist Muslim niyazi soldier who surrendered and enjoyed Hospitality of indian jail for two years.
Why should india name its missile on rapist invaders ..Pakistan is islamic rapist state which glorifies rapist and is capital of bachabazi so you name ur chinese missile as per that.

  9. Dear writer,

A good article and not without flaws. A little dive into history reveals many things about the history of sub continent. A region where Islam came via arabs, then later came rulers dynasties originated from central Asian, afghan, Turks, persians etc. What was the language 1000 years ago? Saniskart or something else probably? What is the language today? Urdu as we call it in Pakistan or hindi as they call it in India. So even the word Urdu is a Turkish origin. Thousands of words in urdu/hindi used every day are either, turk or Persian or Arabic or even english as I can recall.
Think about various communities or bradris, like, Shaikh, syed, Kakakhel, Yousafzai, Khan, etc. Where did they come from?
Foods that you enjoy every day, where did the blend came from? Read some more history of India, about 200 years ago and get some knowledge about what kind of foods were eaten in those ages and where did the tikka, kebab worms Biryani concept came from? It is unfair to say that this region owns these, and now in the world, such dishes has become signature of indo-pak origin.

Regarding your objection about mr PM promoting from a parallel world. You are making another outcry for something irrelevant. I have never seen a drama or a movie changing people’s lives. I am not saying this will help in freedom of Kashmir. Somethings are exaggerated on both sides, but you on the opposing playground just playing a strange role.

It is okay to watch SaaS bhinkabhi babu thi for a decade but not ertugrul? Is it okay to watch fiction stories of CIA and FBI and superheroes but not something historic? And is it okay to watch a hindu pooja pat every morning but not anything reflecting something from history? Though this series has a lot fiction as well.

  10. The serial promoted by Imran Khan is Ghazi Ertugrul. What does the word Ghazi mean?

A Ghazi is a Muslim soldier, especially one fighting against non-Muslims.

This blatant endorsement of religion-based targeting of non-Muslims by political entities be it by a medieval king or a modern state is shocking.

But the world media thinks it’s ok when leaders of Islamic states do it. Please note the difference between a Ghazi fights non-muslins just because they are non-muslims, from a kin defending his coutry or kingdom but without any overt targetting of followers of other religions.

    This ‘Ghazi’ idea is barbaric.

    • If you have any knowledge ghazi means conquerer , so do some research before comment such a thing lol I can’t stop laughing how can someone be as stupid as you

  11. this is rediculois! we are Indians! our ancestors changed their religion but we didn’t just become Arabs! try saying that to an Arab, they will laugh at you! at least have some pride. The ehsas-e-kamtari is breathtaking in this article.

  12. Dear naila.
There are some corrections in your story piece. First it’s not 12th Century but 13th century. Also osman didn’t laid the foundation but it was Ertugrul ghazi who laid foundation of ottoman empire. He started it from sogut. Another thing this drama is actually good & worth the time . If you would have seen it then you would have known. Anyways

  13. Wo kaum jo apna itihaas hi nahi maanta..aur turkey k itihaas ko apna maanta hai…uska allah hi maalik hai?

  14. Few secular , atheists and so call liberals of Pakistan are getting frustrated to see the success of Ertugral turkish Drama , world must not forget these few people have no roots in Pakistani society, we are Muslims first and than any thing else, We Muslim beleived in universal brotherhood ,Islam is our comming Love , We Love Salhideen Ayubi who was Kurdish, We love Mohammad bin Qasim who was arab, and We Love Ertugram who was Turkish, so must not mistaken or confused with nationality,

    • Yeah we truly saw that love in 1971 in Bangladesh,3 million killed and 1 million fellow muslims Raped.
Your ex Pm calling them Swine.
Aree doglon Tumharee koi limit hii nahi hai.
You took money from king of Jordan and killed thousands of Palestinian under Zia ul haq.
Tumhara Imman sirf aur sirf paisa hai, isliye Tumharee baap bhi budultee rahtee hein, jao beta China koo apnii ladkion koo supply karoo.

      • A ‘higher caste ‘ Hindu becomes unclean if an untouchable comes in contact with him/her, but the raping of an untouchable by a Brahmin, or kshastriya seems to be allowed. Please tell me since the inception of the caste system, a vile and evil system how many millions have and still are suffering because they were born into a certain caste, how many millions of women have been raped because Hindu text treats them less worthy that the cow. Are you going to deny this has been and still is going on today, are you going to deny that India has one of if not the highest number of rapes of women and children in the world.

      • She was being sarcastic. Pakistan is a mixture of many Nations, merging Middle East, Central Asian and Indian culture. India has contributed a lot to our Pakistani identity, no one denies that in Pakistan, but Pakistan is more than just an offshoot from India. It has its own unique regional traditions and experiences that only people that are currently living in Pakistan, evolved from. The written history goes all th3 way back to Indus Valley, Harrapa, Gandhara, Moenjo Daro civilizations. Pakistan is as complex or more complex than India, in some ways, due to its unique geographic location.

  15. To see such insecurities in Indian thinktank and such havoc in their writing skills is amazing. India was once part of Pakistan and this truth will never let indians live peacfully ?

    • Last I knew the writer is Pakistani.
Enjoy what you want to see,but don’t deride others,yr chursii laundiyabaz PM is a big Rundibaz.
Yad hai naa Harem shah aur uskee photo.
Jao beta China koo apni ladkian supply karoo, kyonkii jab tuk China paise dee raha hai woh tumhara naya baap hai.

    • very true, also most northern Hindus consider themselves as Aryan, now the Aryan (not to be mixed up with the nazi fantasy) are from northern Iran and the steppes, so the conclusion is that even northern Indian hindus consider themselves outsiders, so the Timils and Aborignes (who have a darker complexion) can be thought of as being more south asian.

  16. Wonder why the author and the Indian media is so curious about what going on in Pakistan, can’t we turn to our own issues in this crisis.

  17. So chances are… if you were to run a 23&Me or Ancestory gene test it will show that going back 5 or 8th generation your DNA has Turkish links.

Mine showed that… 6 years ago when I ran the test.

  18. One has to be a idiot to detach Pakistanis from Turks. The Delhi Sultanate which ruled India for 350 years was Turk. And today in Pakistan we have a lots of those people who are not local. We are from Iran, Turkey, Afghanistan, Central Asia and much more. The local Indians origin people are there also. So, as Islam is international and Pakistan is also very international. It’s totally unlike India and that was one reason to create Pakistan. And Indians should thank God , that Pakistan was created, otherwise these people would have taken over India once again. So now relax and be happy. Don’t worry what Pakistan watches .

    • The writer is a pakistani if I knew correctly.Watch what you like or become what you want, problem is yr chursii Laundiyabaz Pm is on a high all the time.He gave lextures about Fahasii,so what exactly was he doing with Hareem Shah and co who later got access to even your foreign office.
We are indeed greatfull that you seperated, waise kitnee baap budlogee bhai,jo paise detta hai usko hii apnaa baap bunna lete ho,jao China ko apni ladkian supply karoo joh tumhara present baap hai.

  19. While it’s important to improve local entertainment standards, there’s no harm in using good content from a friendly n Muslim country. I hv not seen such severe rebuttals on any forum against the other series mentioned here, may be bcz they do not convey Islamic values. Moreover, what’s being made to be aired is usually dictated by the audience, n we really need to findour center again.. Whether someone agrees or not, this is Islamic history and we do belong to them in one or another way. If someone compares us with English or American people, we feel proud but relating ertugrul ghazi leads to identity crisis.. Such is the state of our patriotism and devotion.

  20. Yes…it must be very painful for the mental slaves like you who loves your tv screens beaming naked Bollywood dances in your home but is so offended by a historical drama because the hero is a Muslim. Go watch Maha Basharat.

  21. Mr , president sahab yah drama dekhne ki umra nahin hai. Dekhna hai to Nayak film dekhiae Bollywood ki jismein anil Kapoor ek din ka CM bana hai. Yah Pakistan hai yahan log laton ke bhoot baton se nahin mante.take the action.

  22. The only thing common between Turks, Arabs, and Pakis is that they do not have a single military victory among them.

    • Do u remember?? Death of Santa at the hands of Babur? Babur was a turk….Don’t you remember death of Raja Dahir at the hands of Arabs? Don’t u remember death of chahuhaan at the hands of Ghaznawi?…..more …….!!leave it…!

  23. I thought Imran Khan is a progressive and whatever be might his equation with India he’ll take Pakistan forward. But IK is taking Pakistan to ancient Arabia. Good luck IK I hope you succeed in fulfilling Zia Ul Haq’s incomplete mission.

  24. Pakistanis should be thankful they got Imran Khan as a PM.
All this so called paid Pakistanis humiliating the PM are infact making fool of themselves in front of the whole world.
I myself is watching Ertuğrul and the whole Muslims around the world should watch it.
What’s wrong in recommending a true history from which Muslims can learn lessons.
It proves Imran khan is a intelligent man by recommending such a marvellous show in a situation like now , where this show will prove very help ful for the ummah.
So what if it’s from turkey isn’t the whole Muslims world is one and we are one. Nothing wrong in importing something from our brothers if it’s beneficial for the country men.
The very important point here is the shoe itself speak about Muslims who for their benefits can even go to any length destroying their own people and religion.
Today the Pakistanis who are against Imran khan are the people who are paid from inside and outside Pakistan to bring down Imran khan because he is the one who is promising and given opportunity will change Pakistan.
Any ways I hope this do called thinkers were very happy during the reign of corrupt Bhutto musharraf shariffs who brought shame not only to Pakistanis but the entire Muslim communities around the world.
If I am asked for opinion I will recommend all this disgraceful people should be sentence to rigourous punishment for helping to destroy Pakistan.

  25. When people don’t have anything to do at present and have no vision for the future they tend to get carried away by the past. Imran Khan is no exception.

  26. The incestuous dream of Pakistan that they are Turks or Arabs is just that: a wet dream. I have seen Arabs treat Pakistanis very poorly in UAE so this is very interesting. Turks consider Pakistanis as less than condemnable, so this is even more interesting. This shows a Pakistani psyche which is seriously delusional and compromised. The more obvious fact is that Pakistanis are Hindus converted by the sword to Islam. This is why Pakistanis are nowhere; Pakistanis deny who they are and they can NEVER become what they want to be eg Ertugrul !!!! Na Ghar ka, na Ghat ka. Similar to the Kashmir wet dream: Going…. Going….GONE!!!! Best wishes. Dr Sandeep Parmar

  27. The ignorance of the writer is astounding. Such exaggerated terms ‘borderline blasphemy’. Seems to think as if a different people just because some Turks came and invaded the region…in historical times.

  28. For decades we have watched Bollywood and Hollywood, now please let us watch this magnificent drama in peace.
The Mullahs criticized content from West and in a similar tone you are criticizing Ertugral.

  29. It should be noted that not all the actors from the series are Muslim. Esra Bilcig is Orthodox Christian. Engin Altan is (supposedly) also Christian. So how they behave in real life is not reflection on a character they played in a series ‘once upon a time’.

  30. Both Pakistan and India were forced into science and modernity by the English colonization of the subcontinent for almost three centuries
Every thing these nations have is either borrowed from.West or some stupid Initialization or Pakistanoztion of Western thoughts in all.fields from.art.to.scienve

  31. Madam. Your starting line is egregiously ignorant – the roots of India are actually in Pakistan. The Indus Valley civilization which is the origin of all the people of the subcontinent, indeed even the name India is from the Indus River. The Vedas were written by a people that still inhabited the Northern part of the Indus River. Please don’t confuse the history of India with the post colonial era which is a fraction of the whole history. Or with the prevalent religions of the region. And once again – India is for Hindus – these words mean the land of the Indus is for the peoples of the Indus. The people of the Indus have been practicing different religions since the beginning of civilization.

    • The people Indian Subcontinent have been practising Sanatana Dharma which is called as Hinduism. Your Hindu hatred is known, it comes from your deep identity crisis and inferiority complex as you are converted people not following your own religion but a religion of Arabia. And for Vedas, it was written in area around modern day Haryana not in North of Indus. Even the word Indus Valley is oxymoron, It should be Ghaggar-Hakra Valley, as most of sites of it are located in state of Haryana-Rajasthan. The roots of our country don’t lie on Indus but in sites like Rakhigarhi , Lothal etc which are near Ghaggar in Haryana state of India. Regarding Indus, it follow from our side of Ladakh before entering to your country, so it should clear your doubts. And regarding the roots, before the dangerous Arabic religion started invading here, people of Indian Subcontinent followed mostly a Dharmic religions like Hinduism, then Buddhism or Jainism.

  32. Fascinating. Pakistanis enjoying Turkish dramas, Indian enjoy Pakistani dramas especially of the 80s, Brazilians enjoy Indian serials.

  33. One of the things that amazed me was how and why our intelligence agencies did not expose this man, despite knowing the full extent of his lustful antics, drug abuse, and general immorality. Imran’s penchant for sexting was apparently well known in Lahori circles. Most female anchors had excitedly reported receiving images of his genitalia. When my film producer told me this, I dismissed it as a vicious rumour, wondering why someone of his stature would take a risk like that. But Imran was indeed that reckless.
    Reham Khan

  34. Why are you allowing Pakistani journalist write an article for the print?Collusion with enemy and only done by Congress chamchas?

  35. Although most Pakistanis have adopted ( funnily even non-Muslim) Arabic names, the mood is far less Arabic now at least amongst the chattering classes. This may have much to do with improved Indo Arabic relations. The current love seems to be Turkish and maybe Malaysian.
