The best cartoons of the day, chosen by editors at ThePrint.

The selected cartoons appeared first in other publications, either in print or online, or on social media, and are credited appropriately.

Cartoons today largely focus on opposition unity, both in terms of the proposed mahagathbandan (grand alliance) for 2019, as well as the division of power between the Congress and the JD(S) in Karnataka.

In the lead cartoon from Firstpost, Manjul adds a Karnataka touch to allegations that former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was “controlled” by the then Congress president Sonia Gandhi during the tenure of the UPA-I and II.

The reference is to Karnataka chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy’s statement Sunday that he was at the “mercy” of the Congress as he had not win the people’s mandate.

Surendra in The Hindu carries the theme forward, drawing attention to the fact that nearly a week since Kumaraswamy was sworn in as CM, Karnataka is yet to get a full-fledged cabinet. All the shots, Surendra suggests, are being called by the Congress.

In Asian Age, Rubhani offers another take on the situation, suggesting that the JD(S) now lives by the “Congress constitution”.

In Madhav Joshi’s cartoon for Dainik Jagran, PM Modi and BJP president Amit Shah are seen excited about the 2019 contest against a unified opposition going to the polls with the slogan ‘unity in diversity’.

Finally, Alok Nirantar in Sakal Times pokes fun at allegations of EVMs malfunctioning during the bypolls in Maharashtra and UP. He suggests that the only way politicians can ensure success is if “rigged EVMs” appear to be “malfunctioning”.
