India hosts Human Rights capacity building program

Participants included National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in eight Global South countries namely Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Jordan.

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC), concluded a six-day Executive Capacity Building Programme on Human Rights. The program, held between 11 and 16 November, hosted 33 senior-level participants from National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in eight Global South countries: Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Jordan, a PIB press release stated.

The program aimed to foster dialogue, share experiences and best practices, and enhance the capacity of NHRIs to protect and promote human rights globally, with a particular focus on the Global South. Participants engaged in 19 sessions covering diverse topics such as democracy, socio-economic and cultural rights, digital security, and international human rights frameworks. Participants exchanged best practices, reinforcing the global south’s commitment to human rights, inclusivity, and sustainable development.

Experts from various fields led sessions, including former NHRC members, UN officials, and representatives from civil society organizations. The program also included field visits to provide participants with insights into Indian art and culture.

NHRC Chairperson, Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, inaugurated the program, emphasizing the shared values and aspirations of the Global South, particularly in upholding human dignity and equality, the release stated. NHRC Secretary General, Mr Bharat Lal, highlighted India’s diverse heritage and its commitment to human rights and non-violence. He also emphasized the importance of various civilizations that originated in Asia.
