New Delhi: The mother of an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer was found dead Sunday at her house in Rurha Dhamrua village of Ambedkarnagar district by neighbours. A chain, bangles, nose-pin and earrings were found missing from the body of the 90-year-old.
Treating the incident as one of suspected robbery and murder, the police have launched an investigation into the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Indrawati, the mother of IPS officer Ashutosh Mishra, currently posted in Lucknow as Superintendent of Police, Police Headquarters. Mishra was in Lucknow when the incident took place. The body of the deceased was found on a cot inside her home. She had been living alone since the death of her husband.
A senior police officer told ThePrint that at 1.13 PM Sunday, Ramesh Chandra Mishra, a person known to the family, informed the station house officer (SHO) of Malipur that Mishra’s mother died at 8 AM that morning due to a heart attack.
At approximately 2.30 PM, Mishra told the police that he suspected murder. “Mishra informed the police that the jewellery she was wearing was no longer there. He said that his mother was wearing a chain around her neck, earrings, a nose pin, and there was blood around her mouth, which had also been wiped off,” the officer told ThePrint, adding that it pointed to robbery and murder.
The officer said that they immediately took cognisance of the incident. A forensic unit and officers inspected the scene and conducted the panchayatnama proceedings, during which no marks of injury or struggle were found on the body.
The body was sent for a post-mortem examination; a panel of three doctors has been constituted to carry out the proceedings with videography, said the officer. The report indicated that viscera preservation was required to find the cause of death. The heart will be sent for histopathological analysis to provide clarity on her cardiac condition.

A case has been registered under relevant sections at Malipur police station, and legal proceedings are underway, the officer said.
After reports of the incident went viral, several leaders in Uttar Pradesh took note of the death, and condemned the crime. Samajwadi Party (SP) chief and former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav took to micro-blogging platform X, saying, “A heartbreaking piece of news has come in about the murder of an IPS officer’s mother in Ambedkarnagar. In UP, even the police are not safe—unfortunate!”
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati also took to X, calling the incident “extremely tragic.” She said the state’s law and order situation is “extremely concerning”.
“This apprehension among the people regarding such an incident is entirely justified—that if a heinous crime like murder can occur with a police officer’s family, then what will become of the safety of the common public? The government must take due cognisance of this incident and take strict legal action against the culprits, which is absolutely essential,” Mayawati said.
