Gurugram: A young man battling bone cancer in Haryana’s Kurukshetra district has alleged that two assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) and a home guard sodomised him inside Ladwa police station on the night of 17 June after stopping him on his way home from work.
The youth, a resident of Bangaon village in Kurukshetra, works in the loan section of HDFC Bank at Kurukshetra. He is currently undergoing chemotherapy for bone cancer in his left leg.
According to his complaint filed with the police superintendent, he was returning home on his motorcycle when a home guard on duty at the Indri naka stopped him. The youth had covered his face with cloth, which the home guard made him remove.
Shortly after, a Dial-112 team arrived at the spot in a vehicle without a number plate, according to the complaint. One of the two policemen who stepped out, the youth alleged, was drunk and slapped him immediately. When the youth tried to film the policeman on his mobile phone, they snatched the device. He alleged that one of the policemen was from Karnal, someone he already knew, and had previously demanded money from him, which he had refused to pay.
He claimed that he was then forcibly taken to Ladwa police station and his motorcycle was impounded. After being made to wait for about half an hour, he was taken to room number four inside the station, where he was beaten up. Two ASIs and the home guard then made him undress, he alleged. The policemen, seeing that his legs had no hair due to chemotherapy, passed a lewd remark, “Iske patt to ladkiyon jaise hain (his thighs are like a girl’s)”, before sexually assaulting him, his complaint states.
He also alleged that when he told the policemen he had cancer and asked them not to hurt his leg, one of them said they would leave no visible marks on him and then pressed on the cancer-affected portion with their shoes.
He was subsequently handed over to his family, who were summoned to the station.
The next morning, while bathing, the youth noticed he was bleeding. Out of shame and fear, he initially told no one, he wrote in his complaint. When his condition deteriorated, he told his family, who took him to the Community Health Centre in Ladwa. He was referred to Kurukshetra Civil Hospital and is currently being treated at Lok Nayak Jai Parkash (LNJP) Hospital.
Ladwa is the constituency of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.
Doctors at the hospital told media on Friday that the youth has a fracture on one leg and has alleged that he was sexually assaulted at the police station.
Contacted by ThePrint, Ladwa Deputy SP Nirmal Singh confirmed he had received information from the government hospital and had met the youth there. He said the policemen present at the Indri naka that night had given a different version—that they stopped the youth because he had his face covered with cloth, that he argued with them and was drunk, and that he was taken to the station after the argument.
The DSP said the police was verifying the youth’s allegations through CCTV footage from inside the police station and the statement of the station’s munshi, who was present at the time. “If the allegations of sexual assault are found to be true, action will be taken against those responsible,” Singh told ThePrint.
