New Delhi: The Delhi Police has registered at least three FIRs against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for allegedly assaulting on-duty police officers during the INDIA bloc’s protest Wednesday against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, a senior officer said.
The officer told ThePrint the FIR was registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections related to assault on public servants and obstructing them from discharging their duties.
Reacting to the possibility of being booked, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, had said Tuesday that he already has 45 FIRs against him.“I already have 45 FIRs against me, I want the number to reach 100, but this protest will not stop,” he said.
The latest FIRs were registered after two consecutive days of protests by the INDIA bloc MPs, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The LoP, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Mahua Moitra and several other INDIA bloc MPs were detained for the second time on Wednesday.
The MPs had boarded a bus after lunch at CP’s Sagar Ratna. Led by the LoP, the MPs got off the bus and attempted to begin a dharna.
The FIRs follow the confrontation between the Delhi Police, and the Gandhis and other Opposition MPs, when they were stopped near Windsor Place while trying to march towards the Election Commission headquarters.
Moments later Priyanka Gandhi Vadra lay on the road with a copy of the Constitution, surrounded by several parliamentarians and party workers as Rahul Gandhi guarded her. “This is my sister”, shouted the LoP at the Delhi Police officers attempting to remove Priyanka from the spot.
A brief tussle ensued between CRPF personnel in-charge of Rahul Gandhi’s security and the Delhi Police who were trying to disperse the MPs protesting including Gandhi.
Subsequently, as the police began trying to detain the MPs, Priyanka Gandhi, as purportedly seen in a video, allegedly elbowed a woman police officer. In another clip, a man is purportedly seen kicking a police officer from the back.
As the police began pushing more and more protesters inside buses to detain them, TMC MP Mahua Moitra was seen telling mediapersons and her comrades that the scuffle had left her bloodied.
