Hyderabad: A video of a bomb blast during a funeral procession is being widely shared on social media. It’s shown to be from the funeral of a suicide bomber in Kashmir.
The video has been posted multiple times on Twitter and Facebook, and is going viral on WhatsApp as well. Most posts with the video, including WhatsApp forwards, are being shared with the caption: “A suicide terrorist in Kashmir has been killed by the police before he committed suicide. A number of Muslims from his area gathered and called the terrorist their messiah, but forgot that the suicide bomb attached to him was still active.” The forward ends by saying “Allahu Akbar?”
The video, however, is actually from Syria. The New York Times reported that the video is of a funeral procession in 2012. The funeral was of an activist named Abdul Hadi al-Halabi who was killed by a Syrian government sniper. A car bomb exploded at the funeral procession, killing at least 20 people.

Abdul Hadi al-Halabi was killed on 30 June, 2012 in Zamalka, near the capital Damascus. Referred to as a ‘martyr’, his death was mourned by many, as can be seen from the graphic video.
The same video has been circulated with the fake caption claiming it’s from Kashmir.
Kashmir is in the spotlight because of the killing of journalist Shujaat Bukhari in Srinagar during the Ramzan ceasefire and the release of a United Nations report that alleges human rights violations in the Valley. The UN has called for an “independent international investigation” to look into India’s “human rights violations” in Kashmir. The Human Rights Council meeting began in Geneva Monday, where the UN report on Kashmir is expected to be discussed.
