New Delhi: Several BJP leaders have posted or shared a tweet claiming that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal paid a compensation of Rs 1 crore only to a family of a Muslim doctor of the 100 doctors who lost their lives in the national capital while on Covid-19 duty.

According to lawyer-turned-party BJP worker Ashwini Upadhyay, 100 doctors and 92 teachers have died in Delhi this year but the government paid the compensation amount only to Anas Mujahid. Claiming that this “discrimination is illegal and unconstitutional”, he threatened to take legal action if the same isn’t rectified by 31 May.

Ashwini has only 363 followers on social media platform Twitter, but his tweet has seen over 3,000 retweets and 6,000 likes.

Surendra Poonia, BJP leader, a retired Army Major and an athlete, also made the claim that the Delhi government has so far compensated only one Muslim doctor. This tweet has several thousand likes and retweets too.

Arun Yadav, the social media head of BJP Haryana, Atul Kumar, vice president of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and Vijay Shankar Tiwari, spokesperson of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, also tweeted the same.

Facts deny BJP claim

Several reports, though, show that Kejriwal has so far given a compensation of Rs 1 crore to the several families, including government teachers Seoji Mishra and Nitin Tanwar, and of doctors Joginder Chaudhary, Asheem Gupta and Rakesh Jain. He also gave the same to a deceased sanitary worker Raju.

The image that was being used in the BJP’s tweet is from when Kejriwal handed over the ex-gratia amount to the family of Dr Anas Mujahid, a doctor posted in Guru Teg Bahadur hospital, who succumbed to Covid on 9 May.
