New Delhi: Kolkata nightclubs are now bopping to remix tracks featuring former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s utterance, “humba humba rumba rumba”.

A viral video from Roots, a popular club on Chowringhee Road, shows people cheering and dancing to loud music, lights flashing, and an IPL match playing on a big screen. It looks like a typical club scene, except for the music playing. As Banerjee’s words repeat over and over, the music amps up, and people dance harder.

“Kolkata nightclubs trolling Mamata Banerjee hard,” read the text on the Instagram reel.

Similar clips began to go viral days after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defeated the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026.

“Looks like Calcutta night clubs have turned @MamataOfficial’s political jeering into dance floor remixes… Nothing screams peak rebellion more than trolling Didi through club beats. Loud, unapologetic & celebrating like Didi’s farewell celebrations,” read a post on X, which had the video attached.

Some social media posts describe the trend as a “farewell” to Banerjee, while others highlight how people in Kolkata are using political slogans as part of their fun evenings in nightclubs.

“No outgoing Chief Minister in India has faced this kind of sustained public humiliation. It’s been over a week and the trend is only growing stronger. An unprecedented farewell for Didi,” posted the handle @sanatan_kannada.

‘New Independence’

Soon after the election results were declared on 4 May, people were seen celebrating on the streets, with BJP flags being waved across roads in several areas. Bike rallies and roadshows by BJP supporters were also reported.

The nightclub celebration is seen by some as not only a mockery of the TMC’s electoral defeat, but also as symbolic of a shift in public sentiment following the results. Some on social media claim it reflects a sense of change that is being expressed even in nightclubs.

“They are celebrating real independence after 15 yrs, so obviously let them enjoy,” read a comment on the Instagram reel.
