Rawat’s military option threat against China unwise. Rhetoric is for politicians, not military leadership

CDS Bipin Rawat’s threat of exercising military option against China on the LAC is unwise. Rhetoric and bravado are usually expected from politicians, not military leadership. Calling for action against a more powerful defence force, that too when efforts are on to resolve the border conflict through talks, is counter-productive.

  1. Chinese are trying to win without firing bullet, We are capable to teach lesson to them. We must take them head on. Your channel seams to be antinational. Encourage armed forces and push back those bandits from our land. They are cowards not fought war for years and time has come to keel them,

  2. It’s a statement by top military general . And is not , only a brain wave of general sahib . But must have been thought over , by the top diplomats and senior political leadership.
Anyhow , military operations for resolving the disputed issues , can only be adopted ; when you are more powerful than the adversary. Hope the diplomatic skills will be sufficient for , disengagement.

  3. Expected reaction from a news portal, when it finds it’s financiers are being threatened from a nationalistic military units top brass.

  4. Agree with the views… There should not be any political statements from the CDS side.
This should remain non political position.

  5. The print must have been shocked that CDS had threatened its financiers of military action and looming threat of drying up of money from chinese CCP.

  6. Yes I agree with the print team that the military must never make political rehetoric; their job is to follow the military objective set by the civilian leadrship. So its unwise on the part of the CDS to make such a statement. He should do well to learn from his predecessor Field Marshal Manekshaw who said the time is not right to take military action in April 1971 when asked by PM Indira Gandhi. Mrs Gandhi wanted to take military actions in April itself, but the Field Marshal waited until winter after considering all options. Even Pakistan was so miffed by India’s non-action that it attacked by itself. Only in 17 days Indian miliatary made the Pakistanis surrender and it remained the biggest military action after the second world war and it gave birth to a big nation.

  7. Really ! This sort of cowardliness been injected into people of Bharat since 1947. Let’s do this exercise. Invite antisocial elements to occupy ‘The Print’ assets and then keep on writing messages like above. Aren’t your team ashamed of yourself by writing such articles targeting Bravery of Bharat’s Soul. Why don’t your management make an effort to shift your office to Pakistan Occupied Kashmir or China Occupied Kashmir. That could be truly justified.

  8. It’s decidedly unwise but it’s no surprise given his earlier track record and what appears to be tacit encouragement from the folks at the top. It’s really unfortunate the way defence forces top brass has started behaving in last few years, commenting on foreign policy aspects which are best left to foreign ministry or the Central Govt. Just a couple of months back we had the army chief commenting on Nepal.

  9. Why is military option a rhetoric? In lala land is the editorial team living in? war is cruel but when things go out of hand, it needs to be exercised. The utopian non-rhetoric attitude can be kept for a utopian era of demilitarized nations !

  10. An on record statement of this nature can only be made after obtaining prior approval from the political executive. In fact, by its specific direction. It commits to the nation that if Status quo ante cannot be secured through dialogue, military force shall be used. The altered ground position is unacceptable. That conveys to China as well that the government is not retaining any flexibility in this regard. If such a determination of moving up the escalatory ladder has not in fact been made by the government so far, the statement will cause consternation.
