PM Modi’s claim that 40 Trinamool MLAs are in touch with him and will desert their party after 23 May is shocking. It doesn’t behove the prime minister to threaten to destabilise a state government even if it’s just campaign rhetoric. Such open threats of horse-trading undermine democracy.
Mumbai doesn’t care much for democracy. It showed that again today
Mumbai has lived up to its notorious reputation of being indifferent towards elections with just 50-odd per cent voting. This shames all the campaigns that strongly urged people to vote, including those by PM Modi, film stars and Election Commission. India’s commercial capital obviously cares more about commerce than democracy.
Sri Lanka’s hijab ban is justified, must not be construed as Islamophobia
Sri Lanka’s ban on face veils that prevent security identification is understandable and justified after the horrific Easter Sunday terror attacks. Several European countries had enforced similar restrictions, including France, Belgium and Austria. Colombo’s emergency measure must not be interpreted as Islamophobia or turned into a rallying cry for activists.
More Mumbaikars should vote, for sure. That would raise the bar for the sovereign republic of the BMC. It could not have got away with such lacklustre performance for so long if more citizens were voting, enforcing the ultimate accountability in a democracy. Long weekend sounds elitist, most Mumbaikars cannot hop across to the Maldives. However, summer holidays could be a factor. I am waiting for a flip in the calendar that takes the general election back to year end, not peak of summer.
