That India’s reliance on Chinese imports remains high is not surprising. It will take time for domestic manufacturing to scale up enough to act as a substitute, regardless of the geopolitical exigencies. But the recent jump in imports is a timely nudge for a major policy priority for Budget 2023.

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju’s concern over increasing pendency in Supreme Court is valid. But bail applications involve personal liberties and should be given priority by the apex court. PILs can definitely wait. Better to first focus on deciding long-pending appeals to ensure quick disposal of cases in lower courts.
