Kolkata: Lashing out at the Election Commission over its decision to bar her from campaigning for 24 hours, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she would stage a dharna in the city on Tuesday to protest against the poll panel’s “unconstitutional decision”.

Taking to Twitter, she wrote, “To protest against the undemocratic and unconstitutional decision of the Election Commission of India, I will sit on dharna tomorrow at Gandhi Murti, Kolkata from 12 noon.”

The poll panel’s order came after Banerjee’s remarks against central forces and a statement which had alleged religious overtones.

“Commission hereby condemns such statements potent with serious law and order problems across the state (s) and sternly warns Mamata Banerjee and advises her to desist from using such statements while making public utterances during the period when Model Code of Conduct is in force,” the commission said in its order.

Assembly polls in West Bengal began on March 27, and the remaining four of the eight phases of elections will be held between April 17 and April 29.

  1. EC has deliberately decided on a poll that would stretch for a month and more. This is to make Polling free and peaceful but now after four phase is over the design is very clear that this decision is to make and facilitate Modi and Amit Shah play their game to upset the people’s choice. It is seen that BJP is allowed to bring in rowdy elements from outside Bengal and is very liberal with the polling MCC violation by Modi and Shah while it is helping them to make transfers of officials in consultations with BJP. Its outright flagrant violation of EC’s role of being impartial and transparent to provide equal opportunity to all the the Political parties. But one thing for sure it is drawing more and more sympathy for Mamata the way Modi is ebcome daily passenger in attending to campaign in Bengal and that is at the cost of lives of millions of people from spread of Koruna. Modi and Amit Shah must be restrained in calling mamata a leader of Muslim community and taken to task for the same. Mamata gives equal weightage to all the communities which Modi makes use of and calls her a leader of minority community. Why is Election commission not taking cognizance of the issue?
