Mumbai: Drawing parallels between his family and that of the current Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray said Tuesday that only history will decide how some people look at such dynasties.

The former chief minister was referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party’s frequent jibes about dynasties.

“Yes, I am a product of a dynasty and I am proud of my lineage,” Uddhav said at his annual Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park. “One who doesn’t believe in the institution of family, which is an integral part of Hindu culture, has no moral right to talk about dynasty.”

While Uddhav’s father Balasaheb Thackeray is the founder of the Shiv Sena — a party that Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde now heads — CJI Chandrachud’s father Y.V. Chandrachud served as India’s 16th Chief Justice of India.

Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud headed the Constitutional Bench that heard the Sena versus Sena tussle this May and also pulled up Maharashtra Speaker Rahul Narvekar for the delay over hearing disqualification petitions of the two rival Sena factions — 20 (out of total 40) from the Shiv Sena led by Shinde, and all 14 from the Shiv Sena (UBT) led by Uddhav.

“If you hate dynasties, what will you do with our dynasties that have joined our party?” he asked. “I want to talk about one more family. Chief Justice of India D.Y.Chandrachud. He is there by his merit, but his father was also a CJI — a stern and upright CJI.”
