New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wednesday reconstituted its top decision-making body, the parliamentary board, dropping Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and Maharashtra’s Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis — the three mass leaders of the BJP who were widely expected to make it to the top body – were also left out.

However, Fadnavis has been made a member of the party’s Central Election Committee which selects candidates during Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

Chaired by BJP president JP Nadda, the newly constituted board has 11 leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Minister and former Assam CM Sarbanand Sonowal and former Karnataka CM B.S. Yediyurappa.

Telangana BJP leader K Laxman, Iqbal Singh Lalpura from Punjab, Sudha Yadav from Haryana, Satyanarayan Jatiya from Madhya Pradesh and BJP national general secretary (organization) BL Santosh are also part of the parliamentary board. Santosh, who is from Karnataka, was named the board’s secretary.

The omission of Gadkari came as a surprise as former national presidents of the BJP usually find their place in the party’s apex body. The six new faces in the parliamentary board are Yediyurappa, Sonowal, K. Laxman, Iqbal Singh Lalpura, Sudha Yadav and Jatiya. In a first, a Sikh, Lalpura, has been appointed to the top body, said BJP sources.

Reorganisation of BJP’s CEC

The BJP’s central election committee (CEC) also underwent a reorganisation. The body now comprises 15 members, including 11, who are part of the parliamentary board. The other names in this body are: Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, MP Om Mathur and Vanathi Srinivasan — in her capacity as the chief of BJP women’s wing. Those dropped from the CEC include Jual Oram, Shahnawaz Hussain and Vijaya Rahatakar.

Emphasis on diversity

A senior BJP leader said the new parliamentary board shows how BJP rewards old workers and that there is a lot of emphasis on diversity.

“It’s clear from the board that how the party rewards old workers and values the experience of its Karyakartas. People like BSY, Satya Narayan Jatia, K Laxman have given their lives to the party, building it brick by brick from the start. Them being brough to the highest decision-making body offers a glimpse of how the party values its esteemed Karyakartas,” a party source said.

Emphasising on diversity, the party source added, “There is evidently an emphasis on diversity. Sarbananda Sonowal is from the northeast, L Laxman and BS Yeddyurappa hail from the south. In Iqbal Singh Lalpura, there is a Sikh”.

“Sudha Yadav is a self-made political leader whose husband was martyred in Kargil. Her inclusion shows respect to women and families of the armed forces. Representation from the South and Northeast is at an all-time high of sorts,” the leader underlined.
