Aligarh: Six days after “accidentally” being shot in the head by a police sub-inspector at Aligarh’s Nagar Kotwali police station, a woman died of her injuries Thursday.

The sub-inspector, Manoj Sharma, who has reportedly been suspended for negligence, is currently absconding, and a reward has been announced for information that might lead to his arrest.

Sudeep, a clerk at the police station, who allegedly handed him the gun and was on the run since the incident, was arrested Thursday.

The deceased Ishrat Nigar had visited the Nagar Kotwali police station last Friday to inquire about the delay in her passport verification process.

Police sources said that Sharma was loading his pistol at the time, and the weapon accidentally went off.

Speaking to ThePrint, Circle Officer (city) Abhay Pandey said that a departmental inquiry was conducted into the incident and it was found that Sudeep was not responsible for carrying out passport verifications and yet had called the woman to the police station. On the day of the incident, he had taken out the pistol and handed it to the sub-inspector without separating the magazine.

Nigar’s son, who accompanied his mother to the police station, has reportedly said that Sharma intentionally shot his mother after a brief altercation over her passport verification.

The woman was admitted to the J.N. Medical College, where she succumbed to her injuries Thursday.

Sharma was reportedly accused of kicking a man while posted in Agra in the past.

Former SP MLA Zameer Ullah Khan says the Muslim community has demanded a compensation of Rs 50 lakh for Nigar’s family.
