Lucknow: A retired deputy inspector general (DIG) of Uttar Pradesh police has been booked for allegedly indulging in unnatural sex with an eight-year-old boy whose family had been residing in his house on rent for the past two years.

The 65-year-old — who is retired from the state police services (SPS) and has served as DIG (fire services) of UP Police in Lucknow, and SP in several districts of the state like Mahoba and Kushinagar — is a native of Sultanpur and resides in the district’s Laxmanpur area, according to details from his profile on the UP police website.

The FIR lodged in the Kotwali police station says the SPS officer who was promoted to the IPS cadre under the promotion quota and allotted the 2005 batch, had been assaulting the minor for the past few months by forcefully taking him to his room and, at times, “luring him”.

The minor revealed his ordeal following the accused’s latest attempt to sexually assault him on 17 February.

According to the FIR, the child’s mother said that she, along with her two minor children, had been residing in a portion of the accused’s house on rent for the past two years.

“The accused has been taking my elder son to his room forcefully and, at times, by luring him to accompany him. He would remove his pants and assault him. He has been doing this for several days. Yesterday, when he caught my son to assault him again, he somehow escaped from his grasp and informed me about it. I came to the police station and informed them about the incident,” the FIR, which ThePrint has accessed, quotes the child’s mother as saying.

Speaking to ThePrint, a Sultanpur police officer said that Kotwali police informed the Sultanpur superintendent of police (SP) about the incident, following which the matter reached senior UP police officers and an FIR was lodged against the accused on 19 February.

“The Kotwali police SHO first informed the Sultanpur CO and the SP. Senior UP police officers were subsequently informed about the case and an FIR was lodged against the retired officer after they directed that he be booked. The child’s statement is yet to be recorded. If the child confirms assault in his statement before a magistrate, he will have to be arrested,” the officer said.

Another police officer said that the accused’s wife, too, was privy to the assault.

The FIR against Singh was lodged under Indian Penal Code’s (IPC) sections 377 (unnatural offences) and sections 5 and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, which deal with ‘aggravated penetrative sexual assault’.

Speaking to ThePrint, the minor’s father said, “I arrived in Sultanpur after I got to know about this incident. We have informed local police. Senior police officers too have been informed. We are waiting for action.” He works in a private company in Mumbai while his wife is a homemaker and lives in Sultanpur with their two children.
