New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in Assam Monday that the country’s birth and death register would be linked to the census, making the next population exercise automatic.

He said: “By 2024, every birth and death will be registered, which means our census will be updated automatically.”

He added: “The Home Ministry has decided to add modern techniques to make the census more scientific. The next census will be an e-census, a 100% perfect census.”

The Home Minister said details would be added to the census register after each birth, and when the child turns 18, the name would be included in the electoral roll. After a death, the name would be deleted, he said, adding that the change of names and addresses would be smoother as “everything will be linked”.

Shah also said his family would be the first to fill all details online in the software when it is launched.

The Home Minister was speaking Monday at the inauguration of a census office in Amingaon in Kamrup, Assam.

Shah said this e-census would ensure 100 per cent enumeration and provide the basis for the country’s development plan for the next 25 years.

The Home Minister said: “The census has an important role in policymaking. Only the census can say what’s the status of our development, (about) the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and what kind of lifestyle people have in the mountains, cities and villages.”
