New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for strict action against the culprits in the Hathras gang rape and assault case, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said Wednesday after a conversation with the former.

In a tweet in Hindi, the UP CM said, “Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji spoke on the Hathras incident and said strict action should be taken against the culprits.”

The statement came amid outrage over the UP Police’s decision to forcibly cremate the 20-year-old Dalit victim’s body without the presence of her family members.

In another tweet, the CM said those guilty of the “unfortunate incident” will not be spared. He said a Special Investigation Team has been formed to investigate the case, which will submit its report in the next seven days. To ensure timely justice to the victim, the case will be tried in a fast-track court, he added.

The case

The woman was allegedly gang raped and assaulted by four men on 14 September at Bool Garhi village in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh. She succumbed to her injuries early Tuesday morning in Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital.

Her body reached Bool Garhi district around 1 am on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. The UP Police cremated her body in the village without allowing her family members a “last look” even as they kept requesting them to wait until sunrise.

ThePrint reported that the police cremated her to “maintain the law and order situation” amid fears that the issue would be “blown out of proportion” and “politicised”.

  1. Could it be that the PM took such an extraordinary interest in this case , suspecting that Yogi would not take much interest in investigations , as the victim was a Dalit. What else can explain this unusual interest , since in earlier gruesome cases of rape and cow terrorism, he hasn’t spoken to any State CM ?
