Srinagar: More than two-and-a-half months after the Narendra Modi government scrapped Article 370 and 35A, withdrawing the special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir, and imposed a severe clampdown, the BJP Sunday held its first major rally in Srinagar in an attempt to resume political activity in the turmoiled region.

BJP leader Ram Madhav, the incharge of party’s Jammu and Kashmir affairs, Sunday urged people to open shops, resume work and return to normalcy. “There are only two ways ahead — that of peace and development. And those who would create hurdle will be dealt with sternly,” he said.

Madhav addressed BJP workers from Jammu and Kashmir at a party youth convention held at Srinagar’s Tagore Hall where members and youth leaders from the state division were also present.

‘Situation has now improved for all political activities’

“We did not want to gain political mileage out of the decision, which is why it took me all this while to be here. Those who wanted to gain mileage arrived at Srinagar airport but our security forces stopped them,” Madhav said, adding the situation has now improved for all political activities.

Listing the benefits of the removal of Article 370, Madhav shared in detail the BJP’s vision behind the move. The leader also asked party workers to not pay heed to those criticising the government’s move.

“If we have to keep 200 people behind bars to maintain peace and order in the Valley, it is worth it,” Madhav said while taking a dig at PDP and NC. Madhav blamed the two families — of NC leader Omar Abdullah and PDP chief Mehmooba Mufti — for all the corruption and violence in the state.

“Everyone is afraid of (Prime Minister) Modi ji, the people of Kashmir do not need to fear anyone or give in to anyone’s threats,” he said.

‘There will be more jobs now for people of Kashmir’

Earlier, Madhav had visited Jammu and Kashmir days before the government decided to revoke its special status. He was among the leaders sent to Kashmir on 1 August to review the situation ahead of the decision.

“Modi ji has taken this important decision and the transformation has been completed and it is now up to people to move ahead,” he said.

Stating that the decision will not put people’s jobs and land in danger, Madhav said there will be more jobs for the people of Kashmir and only they will have the right to it.

“The decision taken by BJP has opened more avenues and job opportunities for people of Kashmir,” he said.

Madhav said PM Modi played his part by taking the “big decision”, and now people had to do their part and embrace Kashmir with open arms.

“Not just the land, the people of Kashmir belong to us. I urge people to spend their next holiday in Kashmir, take their next pilgrimage to Amarnath and the newly-wed couples should enjoy their honeymoon in Gulmarg,” Madhav said.

“Everyone in India is craving for Kashmir,” Madhav added.
