New Delhi: The Delhi Police used a mosque in Old Delhi as a means of cautioning the public against what it calls an “unnecessary protest”.

“Please make your children and family members aware that they should not participate in any unnecessary protests,” says a police personnel in a video purportedly showing him reading out instructions from a mosque in the walled city region of the Capital that has appeared across social media timelines from Thursday evening onwards.

“Don’t believe in any rumours or pay attention to them. Don’t fall prey to any inciting message; be a responsible citizen and adhere to the law. Cooperate with the police and the administration to maintain the security of your area,” the policeman can be heard saying in the video.

“Please make your children and family members aware that they should not participate in any unnecessary protests; as the administration is doing its work, they should not be harmed in any way.”

This comes as Opposition parties have launched daily protests seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) calling for a massive protest at Jantar Mantar Saturday, and the Centre mobilising security forces in an apparent bid to quell or overawe the demonstration.

The Delhi Police has not confined its messaging to places of worship. Senior officers of the force said that other gathering places and marketplaces have also been used to “disseminate information”, urging people not to join the “unlawful” protest.

“There has not been any permission given for any such larger mobilisation of people on the streets in the Capital over the last few days, and the situation remains the same for the protest call given for 10 October,” a senior Delhi Police officer told ThePrint. “There is no ambiguity that all of these mobilisations are unlawful assemblies and hence instructions have been issued over the last few days since the protests are underway,” he further said.

Referring to the particular video that appeared on social media on Thursday, a senior police officer said that the personnel’s only intention was to “ensure youth are not misguided into joining what amounts to an unlawful assembly”.

“The intention of the personnel in the video or several others who are issuing such guidelines at other places of worship or marketplaces from where guidelines can be issued en masse is just to ensure that youth are not misguided and become part of an unlawful assembly,” he told ThePrint.

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
