New Delhi: More than 400 academicians from across the world have condemned in an open letter Tuesday, the rioting and violence that took place last week in Northeast Delhi killing at least 47 people.

Calling the communal riots in Delhi an “anti-Muslim pogrom”, the academicians have held BJP leader Kapil Mishra responsible for the violence after he warned people of dire consequences if the protest sites were not cleared. They note that that Mishra issued this ultimatum in the presence of a senior police officer.

The signatories of the letter include academicians from universities in India such as JNU, Ambedkar University, IIT-Bombay, IIT-Kharagpur and foreign universities such as University of Pennsylvania, UCLA, University College Dublin, SOAS University of London, among others, refer to the rioters as “fanatical right-wing mobs” and “extremist Hindutva rioters”.

‘Not an anti-CAA clash. It was anti-Muslim’

The academics state that the violence was anti-Muslim and not a “clash” between pro-CAA and anti-CAA camps. They also highlight that “there are no two sides to this story, there is no nuance, only senseless violence fuelled by the communal agenda of the upper-caste Hindu right-wing”.

Speaking about the breakdown of law and order in Delhi, the academics also mention the incidents at Jamia Millia Islamia, JNU and AMU which preceded the large-scale violence in Delhi. They say that all these incidents have taken place because of the complicity of the Delhi Police who are “acting in near-perfect coordination with the right-wing mobs”.

The letter goes on to draw a comparison of the riots in Delhi to the Gujarat riots of 2002, in which more than 1,000 people were killed and the anti-CAA violence in Uttar Pradesh.

Their demands

As part of their list of demands, the academics have asked for a judicial inquiry to be set up to investigate the actions of the Delhi Police as well as a ban on organisations such as the Bajrang Dal, which they believe were at the “forefront of this pogrom and which have been emboldened under the Modi regime”.

They have also demanded that the state immediately and adequately compensate those whose houses, shops and livelihoods have been destroyed.

  1. I don’t know why the so called intellectuals are bereft of common sense. Although ouster of the BJP -led government is their sole objective, their actions would only strengthen and not weaken the resolute of the majority of Indians who had overwhelmingly voted for Modi for two terms. Foreign media can be manipulated, but Indian populace cannot be convinced that Delhi riots were one sided pogroms from the evidence galore including videos showing warring mobs. After turning aggressive on CAA protests for three months endorsing communally charged hate speeches under the cover of national flag and constitution you cannot claim victimhood after your call for action turns into communal riots killing people from both sides.

  2. It might be credible politically if you are a modi hater. But to paint the arson at delhi on him, you must be motivated enough to do so by means but not the facts. Taking reference of stray academicians would not help.

  3. When the so-called literates and the opposition sound their clarion call against each and everything done by the ruling class, you must know that the ruler is right. Only that the Modi haters have too much of their time to twist and turn their brains to project just the dark side of the moon. Have you asked why trusted world organisations also have started poking their nose into the internal affairs of India? Because the markets space in India has become restricted for the haters. Why Modi is a cup of fresh air for Hindus is because after 75 years of having been treated as second class citizens by Congress and Co. they feel they are secure and protected and free to practice their religious practices. Also, the previous governments have fleeced the Rohingyas, the Bengalis through intermediaries and have become billionaires and politically more powerful with their help to stay in power. Why it took more than 75 years to start the building of Ram Mandir and other projects planned but never realized by Congress? Why the Pandits and the Sikhs have not been given due legal diligence to this day? Why the same gangs of literates have not intervened in the Chareetraheen Bagh issue? Why the jihadi MAOlas The Allahoists, the Hallalonomics followers and their affiliates have more faith and blind trust in their religion than the country and the laws that provide them the safest place on earth? Why the Leftists, the Maoists, the Bhim Sena and other Jaychands like the Bhel Puri Congressists all want to bring Modi’s government down if not to help the tukre tukre gangs in their nefarious machinations? When will the Muslims help to restore all the thousands of Hindu temples destroyed so far in J&K and elsewhere as Hindus have provided 5 acres of land to build their mosque or whatever they were deprived of in the Ram Mandir case? Why every attack by the army is over-questioned? Why Hindu terrorism was falsely put afloat by Congress according to a book by Maria? Is not Sanatan Dharm the most scientific way of life that still stands the test of time when others have simply disappeared or on the way to disappear because of their ruthless expansionist strategy? Is not the call for prayer from mosques a weaponized threat that goes into a form of brainwashing to kill the infidels who don’t adhere to their Allah’s provisions as stated by Mohamed? Was the Delhi riot not the replicate as suffered by the pandits and strategized by the Gaznav-e-Hind Kashmiri goons?……

  4. Anti-Hindu liberal/secular brigade doing its job in a perfectly coordinated manner. Unfortunately, an overwhelming majority of these “academicians” are Hindu by birth. Such a shame.
Maybe that is the reason why we Hindus had to suffer the ignominy of 1000 years of foreign rule and persecution. We never stood united in the face of adversity.

  5. Kapil Mishra is small potatoes or, to use my favourite expression, a packet of potato crisps. Little more than a foot soldier, although an especially venomous one. These events are attracting enormous global opprobrium, deservedly so. One hopes the diplomatic corps will be briefing the government suitably.
