Guwahati: Football legend Diego Maradona’s stolen watch worth Rs 20 lakh has been recovered from Assam.
The limited edition watch was recovered from the possession of an Assam resident who used to work in Dubai and returned to the country recently.
Tweeting about the incident, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “In an act of international cooperation @assampolice has coordinated with @dubaipoliceHQ through Indian federal LEA to recover a heritage @Hublot watch belonging to legendary footballer Late Diego Maradona and arrested one Wazid Hussein. Follow up lawful action is being taken.”

The Director General of Assam Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta in a tweet also stated that the Hublot watch belonging to the Argentine footballer had been stolen by one Wazid Hussain.
“Wazid Hussain had stolen a limited edition Maradona-signed Hublot watch and fled to Assam. Today morning at 4:00 am we arrested Wazid from his residence in Sibsagar,” Mahanta’s tweet read. He added, “The watch belonged to the legendary Footballer player himself, which was being stored in Dubai along with other belongings in a safe.”

How was it stolen
The footballer, considered one of the greatest players in the sport’s history, had reportedly died of a heart attack in 2020.
Maradona had been seen wearing two Hublot Big Bang watches during the 2010 FIFA World Cup when the watch brand had launched its Maradona Big Bang Chronograph Limited Edition.
According to a NDTV report, the accused had been a security guard at the company where Marandona’s belongings had been stored. Hussain had returned to India supposedly on account of his ailing father.
