Alibag: Republic TV Editor-in- Chief Arnab Goswami, arrested on Wednesday for allegedly abetting the suicide of an interior designer, was remanded to judicial custody till Nov 18 by a court here.

The court gave the ruling late in the night.

Goswami has filed for bail and the court has asked the investigation officer to file reply, the journalist’s lawyer Gaurav Parkar said.

In the Alibag court, police had sought a 14-day remand of Goswami, he said.

Goswami (47), was picked up by a team of Raigad police from his Mumbai home earlier in the day. He was seen being pushed into the police van and claimed he was assaulted by police before being taken away.

“Police arrested Goswami under sections 306 (abetment of suicide), and 34 (acts done by persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code,” a police official said.

Soon after the vehicle carrying Goswami reached Alibag, just over 90 km from Mumbai, he was produced in a local court, which directed police to take him to the civil hospital there for medical check-up, after his lawyer alleged the senior journalist was assaulted by police.

“Goswami was produced before a magistrate court in Alibag where he complained of physical assault at the hands of the police team that barged into his house this morning, Parkar said.

The magistrate took note of the allegations and directed the police to take Goswami to the civil hospital for medical check-up.

After the medical check-up, Goswami was brought back to the court for hearing on his remand.

The architect and his mother committed suicide in 2018 over alleged non-payment of dues by Republic TV, police said.

In May this year, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh announced he has ordered a fresh probe in the case after a complaint by Adnya Naik, daughter of the architect Anvay Naik.

  1. The system sucks! A magistrate remanded Arnab to judicial custody contradicting herself that police had no locus standi to arrest him! Thereby putting a judicial stamp on a wrongdoing! High court denies interim relief and proposes approaching lower court in Section 439! The section itself puts the stamp of an offender to Arnab! Abetment to suicide has to be in proximity. this way anyone can leave behind a note implicating any commercial contact for money owed. Suicide is also a criminal act. So what are we talking here. His daughter resurfaces after 2 years is most shocking and unacceptable that she is allowed to disrupt other people’s lives at her own pace

  2. I am amazed at the useless comments some people have made. In democracy people who show the mirror to power on wrong doings and are put behind bars while some spineless people comment on Listening to culture listening talks only while wrong doings of politicians are being put underneath the carpet that’s the death of countries ethics, culture and humanity by public with limited thinkers! Shallows reporters have not stood by Arnab selfishness galore

  3. At least for 14 days there will be no 3rd class journalism by Arnab…. every human life matters weather it be SSR are an designer….he shouted for SSR but took life of a mother and son… should be punished harshly

  4. Why it is conveniently ignored that court declared the arrest as illegal and mentioned that police had no locus standi in the case and still remanded 14 days custody.
This article seems more of propaganda driven rather then true journalism.

    • He Can Pay The Dues But what About Anvay Naik And His Mother Did Suicide Bcoz Of Him Uska Repay Kaise Karegaa …. Bhakt Hona thik Hai Magar Andha Bhakt Mat Ban??????

  5. V good … at least 14 days of slightly more sensible debate on television, with a little less rabid shouting and screaming! We look forward to the day when Indian TV hopefully lands on a culture of intelligent, illuminating and incisive discussion rather than the current toxic imbecility.
