New Delhi: On Sunday, the Delhi Police entered the Jamia Millia Islamia campus, allegedly by force and beat up staff members and students. The students claimed they were peacefully protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), passed by the Narendra Modi government last week, inside the campus.

The police also hurled tear gas shells inside the campus and resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the protestors.

“Police entered the campus by force, no permission was taken. Staff members and students were beaten up and forced to leave the campus,” Jamia Chief Proctor Waseem Ahmed Khan said.

Vice-Chancellor Najma Akhtar too condemned the police action and said there was “no compensation for the psychological damage caused to students”.

The police have however said they entered the campus while chasing miscreants from outside who were involved in arson.

Here are some images clicked a day after the police action on the campus.

  1. A picture is worth a thousand words. It also does not lie, unless it has been doctored. For some, a university campus is a strange, unfamiliar, slightly threatening space. Given to freedom, intellectual curiosity, a natural irreverence towards all forms of orthodoxy and authority. Once again, a fine edit in Indian Express.
