Maharashtra sees rise in active Covid cases, nearly 90 lakh people vaccinated in India so far

New Delhi: Nearly 90 lakh doses of Covid-19 vaccines have been administered across the country, even as active cases continue to decline.

However, Maharashtra, which already accounts for the highest number of Covid-19 cases in India, has seen a sustained increase in its active case count.

The number of new Covid-19 cases detected in the country in the last 24 hours has increased to 11,610. Kerala and Maharashtra accounted for over 60 per cent of the new cases in a single day.

Active cases Wednesday dropped to 1,36,549, accounting for 1.25 per cent of the total cases detected in the country since the beginning of the pandemic. Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal are the states with the highest number of active cases in the country.

India reported 100 Covid-19 deaths in the last 24 hours. The country’s overall death toll now stands at 1,55,913. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Delhi and West Bengal have recorded the highest number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

Punjab’s case fatality rate (CFR) remains the highest in the country, at 3.23. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s CFR is the second highest, at 2.49. At 2.20, Sikkim’s fatality rate is the third highest in the country. The overall fatality rate for India is 1.43.

In the last 24 hours, the number of tests conducted across the country increased to 6,44,931. Over 20.7 crore tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Positivity rate

The daily test positivity rate for India increased slightly to 1.8 per cent in the last 24 hours with the increase in the number of cases. The overall positivity, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is now 5.2 per cent.

Recovered cases

As many as 11,833 Covid-19 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of Covid-19 recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,06,44,858.

Nearly 90 lakh healthcare and frontline workers in the country have been vaccinated across the country since the vaccination drive began last month.

As many as 89,99,230 vaccine doses have been administered till Wednesday.

These include 61,50,922 healthcare workers and 25,71,931 frontline workers who have received the first dose, as well as, 2,76,377 healthcare workers who received the second dose.

A total of 1,09,37,320 people in India have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, with the largest number of cases reported from Maharashtra, followed by Kerala and Karnataka.

States with Highest Active Cases

Active cases in Kerala reduced to 61,030 Wednesday, with 4,937 new Covid-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours.

Over 10 lakh cases of Covid-19 have been detected from the state since the beginning of the pandemic. Of these, 4016 people have died, with 18 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Maharashtra continues to report a rise in active cases. As many as 20,71,306 people in the state have tested positive for the infection so far, of which 38,307 cases are active.

A total of 51,591 people have died of Covid-19 in the state, so far.

In the last 24 hours, 3,663 new cases were detected in the state, while 39 Covid-19 deaths were reported.

In the last 24 hours, Karnataka saw a rise in its active Covid-19 cases to 5,879, with 438 new Covid-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours. This brings the total infections detected in the state since the beginning of the pandemic to 9,46,076.

With six deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s death toll rose to 12,273.

In Tamil Nadu, active cases declined to 4,206. In the last 24 hours, 451 new cases of Covid-19 were detected in the state. A total of 8,46,026 people in the state have been infected with Covid-19 so far.

With seven deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid death toll rose to 12,432.

West Bengal reported 151 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases detected from the state to 5,72,879.

Active cases in the state fell to 3,854. With two deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll rose to 10,235.
