New Delhi: With 8,97,394 active cases of Covid-19, India has recorded 43,70,128 infections so far. According to data by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 73,890 people have died and 33,98,844 have recovered.
In ThePrint’s daily State Tracker, we take a look at the data on testing and the rate at which the infection is spreading throughout India.
For this analysis, we use three parameters:
Rt value, known as reproduction number, is indicative of the number of new cases that are expected to emerge from a single case. An R value of less than 1 suggests that the rate of infection is slow since an infected patient will only infect less than one person.
Positivity rate is the percentage of people who are found to be infected by the virus from those who are being tested. This parameter indicates how widespread the disease is.
Tests per million give insight into the amount of testing being conducted in relation to the population of the area.

Rt value
India’s Rt value increased to 1.07 Wednesday from 1.05 Tuesday.
Puducherry continued to record the lowest Rt value in India at 0.92. This was followed by Manipur at 0.93, Telangana at 0.95, Bihar at 0.96, Nagaland at 0.96, Tamil Nadu at 0.97, Goa at 0.98, Andhra Pradesh at 0.99, Ladakh at 0.99, Assam at 1.00 and Karnataka at 1.00.
Kerala recorded an increase in Rt value to 1.09 Wednesday from 0.99 Tuesday.
Mizoram too continued to record the highest Rt value in India at 1.51. This was followed by Jammu and Kashmir at 1.36, Chhattisgarh at 1.27, Haryana at 1.26 and Himachal Pradesh at 1.25.
For Himachal Pradesh, there was a decrease in Rt value from 1.32 Tuesday.
Positivity rate
India’s positivity rate increased to 8.10 per cent Wednesday from 8.05 per cent Tuesday.
Bihar continued to record the lowest positivity rate in India at 1.21 per cent. This was followed by Gujarat at 1.79 per cent, Mizoram at 2.62 per cent, Manipur at 3.32 per cent and Jharkhand at 4.00 per cent.
Uttar Pradesh recorded an increase in positivity rate to 4.29 per cent Wednesday from 3.63 per cent Tuesday.
Chandigarh replaced Puducherry to record the highest positivity rate in India at 31.40 per cent. This was followed by Goa at 28.73 per cent, Puducherry at 28.06 per cent, Maharashtra at 23.35 per cent and Chhattisgarh at 16.09 per cent.
Tests per million
The national average of tests per million stood at 37,776 as of Wednesday.
Madhya Pradesh continued to record the lowest tests per million in India at 18,322. This was followed by West Bengal at 22,520, Chhattisgarh at 23,798 and Uttar Pradesh at 28,473.
Goa too continued to record the highest tests per million in India at 1,35,757. This was followed by Ladakh at 1,26,678, Arunachal Pradesh at 1,22,023 and Delhi at 98,833.
