India’s active cases crosses 1.6 lakh, more than 1.43 crore vaccinated as 2nd phase kicks off

New Delhi: The active Covid case count in India rose to 1,68,627 in the past 24 hours, the highest it has been since 31 January. Meanwhile, over 1.43 crore vaccine doses have been administered in India and the second phase of vaccination began today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also received the first dose of the Covaxin vaccine.

Apart from Maharashtra, which is seeing the highest surge in active cases, 17 other states reported an increase in active cases.

In the last 24 hours, 15,510 people tested positive for Covid-19 across the country. Over 8,200 new cases were detected from Maharashtra alone, while Kerala reported more than 3,200 new cases.

Active cases in India increased to 1,68,627 in the past 24 hours. Maharashtra now has the highest number of active cases in the country, followed by Kerala, Karnataka, Punjab and Tamil Nadu.

In the last 24 hours, 106 people died of Covid-19 across the country. This has taken the country’s death toll to 1,57,157. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Delhi and West Bengal have recorded the highest number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

The overall fatality rate for India is now 1.42. Punjab’s case fatality rate is 3.20 — the highest in the country. Maharashtra’s CFR is 2.42 while Sikkim has recorded a fatality rate of 2.19.

A total of 6,27,668 Covid tests were conducted across 1,222 government and 1,175 private laboratories in the last 24 hours. As many as 21,68,58,774 tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Positivity rate

The daily test positivity rate for India has increased to 2.4 per cent for the last 24 hours as the number of tests conducted decreased over the weekend. The overall positivity of the country, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is 5.1 per cent.

In the last 24 hours, 11,288 Covid-19 patients were discharged across India. This brings the total number of Covid-19 recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,07,86,457.

India started the second phase of vaccinations Monday. In this phase, those over 60 years of age, as well as people above the age of 45 with comorbidities can get themselves vaccinated.

A total of 1,43,01,266 vaccine doses have been administered in India so far. Of these, 1,18,45,075 have received the first dose, while 24,56,191 received the second dose of the vaccine.

As many as 1,11,12,241 people in India have been infected with Covid-19. The largest number of cases were reported from Maharashtra, followed by Kerala and Karnataka.

States with highest active cases

Maharashtra reported 8,293 new cases in the last 24 hours, taking the active case count in the state to 78,212.

A total of 21,55,070 people have been infected in the state since the beginning of the pandemic, of these 52,154 people have died. In the last 24 hours, the state reported 62 deaths.

Active cases in Kerala dropped to 49,709. In last 24 hours, 3,254 new cases were reported in the state, bringing the total number of cases reported to 10,59,403.

As many as 4,197 people have died of Covid in the state, with 15 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Karnataka’s active cases have increased to 5,823, with 521 cases reported in the last 24 hours.

The state reported five Covid-19 deaths in past 24 hours, bringing the death toll of the state to 12,331 since the beginning of the pandemic. A total of 9,51,251 people have been infected in the state since the beginning of the pandemic.

Punjab now has the fourth-highest number of active cases in the country. The state reported 579 new cases in last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases detected in the state to 1,82,176. Active cases have also increased to 4,632.

With seven deaths in the last 24 hours, the Covid death toll for Punjab rose to 5,832.

Tamil Nadu reported 479 new cases of Covid in the last 24 hours, which has brought the total number of cases detected in the state to 8,51,542. Active cases in the state have dropped to 4,022.

Tamil Nadu’s death toll increased to 12,496, with three deaths reported in the last 24 hours.
