India records 24,712 new Covid cases in 24 hours, positivity rate at 2.3%

New Delhi: Throughout this week, the number of tests conducted every day has remained under 11 lakh, causing the test positivity rate to increase slightly. The number of daily Covid-19 cases also saw a rise in the last two days.

Kerala reported more than 6,000 cases for two days in a row Thursday, leading to a further increase in active cases in the state. However, India’s overall active case count continued to decline.

India reported 24,712 new cases of Covid-19 across the country in the last 24 hours. Daily cases have been increasing in the last two days.

The number of active Covid-19 cases in India stood at 2,83,849 Thursday.

In the last 24 hours, 312 deaths were reported from across the country. The total coronavirus death toll in India, since the beginning of the pandemic, now stands at 1,46,756.

Punjab’s case fatality rate (CFR) continues to be the highest in the country at 3.19. Meanwhile, Maharashtra, the state with the highest number of Covid-19 deaths, has the second-highest CFR of 2.56.

Sikkim follows Maharashtra with a CFR of 2.21. India’s overall case fatality rate is at 1.45 now.

In the last 24 hours, the number of tests conducted across 1,199 government laboratories and 1,077 private laboratories in India was 10,39,645.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 16,53,08,366 tests have been carried out.

After falling to a six-month low Tuesday, the test positivity rate (TPR) increased in the past two days, as the number of tests conducted remained under 11 lakh Thursday. The TPR Thursday stood at 2.3 per cent. TPR below 10 per cent indicates that a country is conducting enough tests.

Overall test positivity, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is now 6.1 per cent.

As many as 29,791 Covid-19 patients were discharged from across the country in the last 24 hours. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 96,93,173 people have recovered from the infection.

India has so far reported 1,01,23,778 coronavirus cases since the pandemic began. The largest number of cases so far have been reported from Maharashtra (19,06,371), followed by Karnataka (9,12,340) and Andhra Pradesh (8,79,718).

States with the highest active cases

Kerala has the highest number of active cases in India. The number further increased to 62,974 Thursday.

The state has also been reporting a large number of new infections every day, with 6,169 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. This has brought the total number of cases detected from the state so far to 7,21,510, which is the fifth-highest in the country.

In the last 24 hours, the state reported 22 deaths, bringing the coronavirus death toll to 2,892.

Active cases in Maharashtra reduced to 55,702 Thursday. The total number of coronavirus cases in the state is the highest in the country, at 19,06,371. In the last 24 hours, 3,913 new infections were reported.

The state continues to report the highest number of deaths in the country, with 98 fatalities in the last 24 hours. This brought the total Covid-19 toll to 48,969 in Maharashtra.

Uttar Pradesh reported 810 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total case count in the state to 5,77,642.

The active case count in the state fell to 16,378 while the death toll increased to 8,245, with 21 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

In West Bengal, the active case count dropped to 15,689 Thursday, with 1,628 new Covid-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, the death toll rose to 9,473 with 34 fatalities in the last 24 hours.

A total of 5,41,624 cases were reported in the state since the beginning of the pandemic.

In Chhattisgarh, active cases dropped to 15,635 Thursday. With 1,337 cases reported in the last 24 hours, the total number of cases detected from the state so far increased to 2,71,194.

Of this, 3,227 people have died, with 15 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.
