Daily Covid tests drop below 8 lakh, Kerala, Maharashtra see rise in active cases

New Delhi: With over 6,000 new cases of Covid-19 reported in the last 24 hours, Kerala saw a rise in its active case count for the second consecutive day Thursday. Maharashtra, the state with the second-highest number of active cases, also reported a rise in its active case count.

Meanwhile, the number of Covid-19 tests conducted across the country fell to below eight lakh, although this led to only a marginal rise in the test positivity rate.

In the last 24 hours, India recorded 16,946 new cases of Covid-19, with more than 35 per cent of these cases being reported from Kerala — the state with the highest number of active cases.

India’s active Covid-19 cases continue to decline. On Thursday, active cases in the country fell to 2,13,603, accounting for over eight per cent of the total active coronavirus cases in the world.

Since Wednesday, 198 people with Covid-19 died in the country, bringing the total death toll in India to 1,51,727, since the beginning of the pandemic.

India’s overall case fatality rate (CFR) is now 1.44. Punjab’s case fatality rate, which is the highest in the country, is now 3.21. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s CFR reduced to 2.53. Sikkim has the third-highest fatality rate at 2.14.

The number of Covid-19 tests carried out in the last 24 hours dropped to 7,43,191 in the country. Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 18,42,32,305 Covid-19 tests have been carried out in the country.

The test positivity rate increased further to 2.2 per cent in the last 24 hours, as the number of tests conducted reduced. The overall test positivity rate, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is 5.7 per cent.

As many as 17,652 Covid-19 patients recovered across India in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic in the country to 1,01,46,763, which is the highest in the world.

A total of 1,05,12,093 people have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, with the largest number of cases reported so far from Maharashtra, followed by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Kerala reported a rise in its active cases for the second day in a row. With 6,004 new cases of Covid-19 reported in the state in the last 24 hours, the state’s active case count rose to 65,579.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Kerala has reported 8,25,769 cases of Covid-19. Of these, 3,373 people have died, with 26 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Maharashtra too saw an increase in its active case count to 53,544, with 3,556 new cases detected in the last 24 hours.

The state reported 70 Covid-19 deaths since Wednesday, taking the total death toll to 50,221 since the beginning of the pandemic.

In Uttar Pradesh, active cases continue to decline. On Thursday, active cases dropped to 10,132, with 466 new cases of Covid-19 reported in the last 24 hours.

So far, as many as 5,94,641 people in the state have been infected with Covid-19. Of these, 8,529 people have succumbed to the infection, with 15 Covid-19 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Karnataka’s active case count fell to 8,906 Thursday. With 746 new cases of Covid-19 detected in the last 24 hours, the total number of cases detected in the state rose to 9,29,552, since in the beginning of the pandemic. It is the second-highest after Maharashtra.

The state reported three deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the Covid-19 death toll to 12,152.

In Chhattisgarh, 671 people tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours. Active cases in the state reduced to 7,791.

As of Thursday, 2,91,484 people have been infected in the state since the beginning of the pandemic. So far, 3,527 people have died of Covid-19, of which 10 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.
