Who will give Musharraf security?

When former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf returns to the country to stand trial for the 2007 emergency, who will be entrusted his security? The defence ministry has refused the job, and his lawyers don’t trust the interior ministry with the responsibility.

In a letter to Musharraf’s lawyer Akhter Shah, the defence ministry said “the provision of security under the subject case does not fall under the purview of the ministry of defence”. Following Shah’s appeal to the interior ministry, the ministry issued a notification on 19 March stating that it was willing to make the necessary arrangements for Musharraf’s security. But Shah said he didn’t trust its ability to provide foolproof security to Musharraf as the ministry had itself levelled charges against him.

Shah told Geo News he would raise the issue again in the special court hearing the matter that had ordered the federal government to make security arrangements for Musharraf on his return from the UAE. The former military ruler is being tried for treason.

Pakistani women give Sri Lanka a grand 108-run defeat, win ODI series 3-0

It was a hat-trick, and how! The Pakistani women cricket team won the ICC ODI championship against Sri Lanka Saturday with a perfect score of 3-0. After Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat, the opening pairing of Nahida Khan and Muneeba Ali provided them a 29-run stand. However, it was the spin duo of Sana Mir and Nashra Sandhu that helped Pakistan notch a massive 108-run defeat. The team received a tide of appreciation, including from Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Najam Sethi, who congratulated them on Twitter.

Pakistan gets its first transgendered news anchor

Local channel ‘Koenoor News’ this week became the first in Pakistan to hire a transgendered, Maavia Malik, as a news anchor. Malik has previously worked as a model. After her first news broadcast Friday, Malik received much applause on social media.

The historic moment came a month after Pakistan’s senate unanimously approved the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill 2017, which proposes to empower the community and help them determine their own identity.

Is Nawaz Sharif trying to flee Pakistan?

The man once touted as Pakistan’s Anna Hazare has claimed that former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif wants to leave the country while his party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), is still in office and before judgments on corruption charges against him are delivered. Pakistan is scheduled to hold its general election later this year.

Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Tahirul Qadri conveyed this to senior party leaders in a phone call FridayThe Daily Times also quoted him as saying, “So-called tiger who was intimidating state institutions few days back, now wants to surrender. There can be no negotiations with plunderers and blackmailers.”

Qadri also referred to the 2014 Model Town massacre, where clashes with Punjab police had led to the death of several PAT members, saying the bereaved families wanted the Sharif brothers tried in anti-terrorist courts. The province is led by Shahbaz Sharif, Nawaz’s brother.
