New Delhi: For parents and caregivers in New York, a new programme is offering something unusual and rare — a break. On 16 August, New York City served as a babysitter for 500 families who had signed up for ‘Parent’s Night Out’.
The programme, an initiative by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, is an attempt to share the burden of caregiving. It was the much-needed breathing room parents and caregivers had been looking for.
The free babysitting service was available only for four hours from 4 pm to 8 pm for children between the ages of 6 and 13 on Sunday. While the programme reached only a small number of families, for Mamdani, this offering was symbolic and represented the city’s administration’s broader intent for its residents.
“Making New York City more affordable isn’t just about lowering costs; it’s about giving people back their time,” Mamdani said in a statement.
Raising a child in the US is considered the most expensive, where babysitting services can cost anywhere from $23 to $30 per hour.
Mamdani has campaigned on making New York more affordable for its residents. His latest programme is being seen as a small effort toward that.

What the kids did
One of the babysitting venues was the gymnasium at Shirley Chisholm Recreation Centre in Brooklyn. Different activities were created for children according to their age. For instance, some children were playing basketball, and others were peering into microscopes. Few were trying to handstand against the wall.
There was also an arts and crafts room where children participated in drawing and painting activities. The New York Times wrote about 7-year-old Maia who made a friendship bracelet for her 9-year-old sister Jade.
Sandwiches were served for food. The dinner cost about $8,600 and was paid by the private sponsors, as per the New York City administration.
And this isn’t it. The department is considering offering a similar programme again and has gathered feedback on that.
