New Delhi: Months after getting cancelled, Stephen Colbert has returned triumphantly. The late-night host won Outstanding Variety Series at the 78th Emmy Awards for The Late Night Show with Stephen Colbert.
Colbert and his team even received a standing ovation when they walked on stage to collect their award. This is the sixth and final Emmy award; the show also won five at the Creative Emmy Awards earlier this September.
Stephen Colbert shared that besides bringing a really good, steady job, late-night shows need a large team and are a fantastic incubator for young people to come in to learn to work professionally on a deadline, in cooperation and collaboration.
He thanked head writer Ariel Dumas, who also wrote the jokes for the Emmy Awards and urged Hollywood to hire the crew from The Late Night Show.
“That is the future of our business that we have to look after. I want you to know I got some great news: They are all (available). Hire them; they will make your show better, and they will make your day easier,” he said.
In July, CBS announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would end due to financial reasons amid a challenging environment for late-night television. The network clarified that the decision was not related to the show’s content, performance or any other matter involving Paramount. The programme reportedly cost the American television network nearly $40 million a year. However, fans speculate that the show was axed after Colbert publicly criticised Paramount’s $16 million legal settlement with US President Donald Trump regarding a 60 Minutes interview.
The Late Night Show with Stephen Colbert ran for eleven years and 1,801 episodes, following David Letterman’s departure from the programme.
During its premiere, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert became the highest-rated American late-night talk show for nine consecutive years.
