Kangana called Gen Z ‘gutterchhap’. Internet dug up her old videos on drugs, parties

The backlash comes after Kangana Ranaut spent days attacking women protesters over partying, drugs and "body counts", with users responding by circulating videos from her own past.

New Delhi: After labeling student protestors as “gutterchhap”, “immoral”, and “vulgar”,  actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut’s old videos of dancing at parties, speaking about her past drug addiction, and talking about running away from home to become an actor in Mumbai are resurfacing online.

For the past few days, Ranaut’s Instagram Stories have largely been about how “bad” the younger generation is, particularly the protestors at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar demanding accountability over the NEET paper leak.

In several Stories, Ranaut, 40, called them a “gutter generation” and wrote that “they are so ugly that they can’t even become homemakers.” She also claimed that these girls flaunt their freedom to party, consume drugs and alcohol, and have “endless body counts.”

The internet was quick and responded to her remarks by digging up her old interviews.

One of the first videos to resurface was from an interview in 2019 in which Ranaut argued that parents should not interfere in their children’s sexual freedom, adding that people should practise safe sex and stay with one partner.

“My parents were completely shocked when they found out I was sexually active… I don’t know what they expected,” she said.

While Ranaut has recently been speaking about women today allegedly consuming drugs, a video from 2020 has also resurfaced in which she talks about getting “addicted” to drugs at the age of 15 after leaving home.

“As soon as I ran away from home, within a year or two I had become a film star and a drug addict. I was involved with people from whom only death could separate me,” she said. “Just think, I was so dangerous during my teenage years.”

Apart from these, her controversial remark that India’s Independence in 1947 was “bheek (charity),” while the “real freedom” came in 2014 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power, has also resurfaced.

“That wasn’t freedom; it was alms. The freedom we truly got came in 2014,” she said.

Social media users are also circulating a scene from Ranaut’s 2015 film Tanu Weds Manu Returns, edited into a meme. In the clip, Ranaut appears in a double role of Tanu and Datto, with Datto labelled “Gen Z” reacting to Tanu “politician Kangana” arguing with each other.

Another viral video shows Ranaut dancing at a party. Shar

ing the clip, several social media users have accused the actor of hypocrisy, arguing that the behaviour she is criticising today are things she herself has spoken about or publicly displayed in the past.

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:

  1. Kangana is spot on in her observations regarding the profane abuses hurled at Modi and his late mother. However, she should have kept in mind that the abuses were done by a select few – for the most part, the protesters did not indulge in such crude discourse.
To put the blame on the entirety of the protesters for the acts of a few in unjust and unfair.
However, those who actually abused Modi and his late mother in filthy derogatory language – they must be held accountable and prosecuted.
Unfortunately though, ThePrint has been fan-girling over these scumbags who abused and uttered filth at the protest site.
