Mumbai: The Maharashtra government plans to add about 300 km to the state’s existing metro network over the next three years, as it laid out plans to complete ongoing projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Pune, and Nagpur by 2029-2030.
According to the government, the state currently has a metro network spanning 174-km, and another 291 km is already under construction.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Tuesday reviewed the ongoing projects, worth Rs 2.81 lakh crore, and stressed the need to complete them in the next three years.
The state has multiple other metro projects in different stages of planning. According to officials, a 130-km network is in the pipeline, awaiting the state government’s nod.
The operational length is expected to add another 87 km in the current financial year, while about 300 km more will be operational by 2029-2030.
This would take the total length of the metro network—operational, ongoing and planned—in the state to 683 km. Of the 683 km planned, 428 km will be in Mumbai Metropolitan Region, 170 km in Pune, and 85 km will be in Nagpur, the officials said.
The government plans to fund these projects all by itself. According to it, Rs 27,216 crore will come from the Centre, the state government will put in Rs 50,250 crore and Rs 75,729 crore will be the share of MMRDA, local bodies and other planning authorities.
As part of its expansion plan, 56 stations will be operational this financial year. A further 161 stations are planned by 2029-2030.
Chief Minister Fadnavis Tuesday chaired a meeting of the state cabinet’s Infrastructure Committee. He said the metro expansion in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) would strengthen safe, fast and environment-friendly public transport while supporting future urban growth. The meeting also reviewed the proposed Metro Line-10 connecting Mira Gaon and Gaimukh in the MMR. The 9.68-km elevated corridor with five stations, estimated to cost Rs 8,500 crore, is in the final stages of statutory approvals. Fadnavis directed officials to complete the project within three years.
