This article is shortsighted because it completely misses the greater part of the problem caused by cancel culture: not its effect on those who have already achieved success, but on those who haven’t. Cancel culture is devastating to those who are in the lower throes of their careers and get canceled because of the mob.
Cancel culture’s ultimate failing, however, is that it has no redemptive purpose. The whole point of cancel culture is to literally cancel people and make it as though they did not exist. There is no way for one to redeem oneself in the sight of the mob once the mob has marked one for cancellation. This, alone, makes cancel culture extremely dangerous, regardless of who’s being canceled. This is Stalin-esque; it is the behavior of tyrants and despots. Even the author of the article does not deny this. This author’s point seems to be that it’s “all right” for people to get canceled, if they’re already rich and famous. The cancellation of these people is for the “greater good,” it would seem. It does not seem to have occurred to this author to consider the plight of one who is canceled despite not being rich and famous, nor has it occurred to the author that it might be for the greater good of all to provide a way for those who have been canceled to be “uncanceled.” As it is, the author seems content for some to be canceled, as long as it gives voice to those with whom the author agrees.
This is hypocrisy of the finest order. The author is guilty of exactly the charge she lays at the feet of others. But I don’t expect her to ever acknowledge that.
