Ban of Wendy Donieger’s book was completely justified. Why such events are related to FOE ? Banning a book that is full of misinformation is absolutely correct and in no way hurts the principle of FOE. She makes a number of claims in that book without substantiating them, without providing any footnotes, any references !. Those claims are straight lies. FOE does not mean you can publish misinformation !!
What would you do, respected writer, if tomorrow, I came out with a book, claiming your father was a terrorist? Would you not go to court to try an get the book banned and punish me for my blatant attempt at defaming your father and misleading the people? Or would you simply let it go for upholding FOE? Likewise, and pardon my langue, if someone came out with a painting of you and your sister/mother engaging in coitus, you would also perhaps drag that guy to court. Sorry, but FOE does not give you the freedom to draw my mother naked.
Um calling someone a terrorist is defamation. That’s a separate section of the law. Painting someone naked is indeed FOE. But if that contributes to the said person losing their job or attempting suicide, then the person who painted can be charged under criminal abetment or defamation. Indians laws already have provisions to make sure that people are not affected due to someone being naughty. But your sentiments getting hurt means a rat’s behind, and is how it should be.
