Rajesh Khanna, who delivered 17 hits in a row & had a fan following which included women who married his photos, was akin to a deity. Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Bawarchi made him more relatable.
Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Gol Maal is a crazy romp that turns the classic trope of twin-themed movies on its head, and features a delightful cameo by Amitabh Bachchan.
Even after more than 60 years, the movie is immensely watchable, thanks to easy-breezy comedy, great chemistry, Kishore Kumar's energy and S.D. Burman's tunes.
Kamal Amrohi's Pakeezah took a decade-and-a-half to be made, but is now synonymous with its star, Meena Kumari, who died just after it finally released.
Even before the more famous Anand, the superstar had perfected the role of a dying man who wants to spread joy, but Safar is far darker and less feel-good.
Petrol & diesel prices have barely changed since June 2022, even though oil prices have fallen 28% since then. This has boosted profitability of OMCs and dividend payouts to govt.
The port call witnessed subject matter exchanges between the Indian Navy and the Philippine Navy personnel. There were also sports fixtures, cross-deck visits, and cultural exchanges.
Discussion about outcome of Lok Sabha polls continues to boil in cauldron of expectations only from BJP. Now reverse this equation, what if we asked about the performance of the 'loser'?
Yesterday, I wrote a eulogistic comment here – I also pointed out two grammatical errors. It’s still not been published. Moderation I guess is like inventing a vaccine for Covid-19 that must go through many layers of testing. This when I find a number of comments cleared on other articles which contain expletives, abusive language and stuff. Bravo folks/
A great film, with great songs, great acting and I am going to watch it again today! And I love the way Print writes these essays about these golden oldies.
INCOMPLETE JOURNALISM. BEFORE DELIVERING THE ARTICLE, YOU SHOULD KNOW THE ORIGINAL FILM COPIED BY RESPECTED LATE HRISHIKESH MUKHERJEE. THE FILM BABURCHEE IS COPY OF BENGALI FEATURE FILM ‘GOLPO HOLEO SATTEE’.ACTED BY LEGENDARY ACTOR/COMEDIAN LATE RABI GHOSH. YOU ARE REQUESTED TO SEE MOVIE, THEN U CAN UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ROBI GHOSH AND RAJESH KHANNA.
Actors like Nasiruddin Shaha should atleast have this kind of perspective that mainstream cinema has a different narrative than that of a Realistic Cinema of which Nasir was an integral part.
Actors like Rajesh Khanna may not have received their acting training from some Film Institute, even may not have boasted of a literary lineage,as in case of Mr. Bachhan, who is selling everything from insurance policy to government policies; but they were capable of playing common, ordinary roles without their stardom.
Can you imagine Naseeruddin Shah playing Anandbabu,as in Amar Prem?
Then why such vicious criticism on Rajesh Khanna proclaiming that he was a shallow actor?
So called intellectual actors should know the importance of popular culture and subsequently popular cinema.
They should also know their limitations in understanding our culture.
Once again, an outstanding article by Samira Sood on a movie one can never be tired of watching. It’s a flawless film, one which brought out the best of everyone associated with the movie. Just one point more: Have I got it wrong or was the copy-editor on leave? Read this: “her aunts routinely interrupts her tuition time so she can go wash their clothes, or makes her late for class “. Ought to be “aunts routinely interrupt ….”
Master stroke message at the end of film. Don’t loose self in small small things.
