Stock markets are just one of the many indicators of an economy’s health, yet BSE Sensex scaling 50,000 is fantastic news. Now, the rest of the economy needs to catch up with the hopes investors are betting on. This dizzying rally can’t be sustained without growth and good corporate earnings.

Farm laws on hold an unavoidable setback. Now govt must ensure it doesn’t meet land bill fate

Government’s proposal to put farm laws on hold for 18 months is a setback to much-needed reforms but seems unavoidable under the circumstances. Farmers must grab it and end their agitation. Farm laws mustn’t suffer the same fate as land acquisition bill. The government must use this period for consensus-building.

  1. The National discussion should me more on economy related issues rather than on politics and religion. Politics and religion is a dead horse being flogged leading to frustration among the media.

There need not be a villain in every story.

  2. An eighteen month stay is virtually the end of this edition of agricultural reforms. Tougher ones lie ahead : Raising power tariffs, reducing procurement of wheat and rice, strong curbs on tapping sub soil water. 2. After almost seven years of a certain approach to politics and governance, based on paramountcy, the government might wish to tot up the costs and benefits. A more harmonious outreach to the Opposition in Parliament and the states. Allowing protests, demonstrations, dissent to play out more peacefully. Not using friendly media – is there any other … – and in house social media resources to denigrate others as anti nationals etc etc. 3. If, in a sense, the dialogue with the farmers has not worked out well, this may be a good time for wider introspection.

  3. Fascinating long read in NYT ( column dates to August 2019 ) about how the relationship between Obama and Biden grew and evolved. As a candidate in 2008, Obama knew he lacked governance experience, whereas Joe Biden had a solid track record, especially in foreign policy. I think President Biden, who has surrounded himself with competent, well mannered people, will do a lot of good at home and abroad. It is for India to be an important part of the American scheme of things, by building up its comprehensive national power.
