The UK charged two men with national security offenses after foiling an alleged terror plot at an airbase, which government officials have said was likely directed by Iran.
Mohmed Abdulkarim, 24, was charged with assisting a foreign intelligence service while Nouman Essghir, 24 was charged with with entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the UK, the Crown Prosecution Service said on Tuesday.
Five men in the 20s were arrested on Sept. 27 near the Royal Air Force Fairford base in the south west of England triggering a major incident that forced the evacuation of dozens of homes. Days later, two further men were arrested as part of the probe.
The RAF Fairford base in the county is used by the US Air Force, and the Pentagon removed its bombers in the wake of the incident amid questions over the UK’s ability to secure it.
“The Crown Prosecution Service has decided to prosecute two individuals with National Security Act offenses following a Counter Terrorism Policing investigation into a high-profile incident involving RAF Fairford,” the CPS said in a statement.
The Iranian embassy in London has rejected and dismissed as unfounded any linking of the case to Iran.
