Novo Nordisk A/S stopped two more trials for its experimental heart disease medicine, in a further blow to the drug’s prospects.
Earlier this year, Novo said ziltivekimab failed to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes, diminishing expectations for other ongoing studies.
The Danish drugmaker said Monday it halted two trials testing whether ziltivekimab would help patients with heart failure, each looking at different outcomes.
Novo shares slipped 0.6% in Copenhagen. They are down about 10% since the drugmaker reported the failure of the ziltivekimab trial in late July.
The data monitoring committee found a “low likelihood of a different outcome” in the two trials to the previous study failure, a Novo spokesperson said. The pharmaceutical news site Endpoints first reported Novo’s move.
It comes after Novartis reported its experimental heart drug also failed to help reduce deaths, heart attacks and strokes, casting doubt on the theory that underpinned research on the medicine.
Novo will continue a different study looking at the potential benefit of ziltivekimab following a heart attack, the spokesperson said.
